1080i Is Awesome....
« on: February 02, 2004, 03:11:00 AM »

hey dopefish, just wondering how you got it to work in 1080i mode? what did u mean by "force xbmc into 1080i mode"?

did u just go into the setting menu and choose the rez to be 1080i?

do u have the "use best rez" setting enabled too?

finally, so type of files are u viewing to get the greatest picture? are they vobs, avi, etc?

thanks.

There's no 1080i skins that I know of.  Potentionally it wouldn't be too difficult to alter one of the existing skins and just type it bigger fonts, and perhaps larger icons and whatnot.  As mark pointed out if you have "use best resolution for movies" turned on your resolution will actually bump out of 1080i while watching a movie and go back when switching back to the GUI.  I found that if I turned that setting off you get poorer performance while watching a movie - the screen looked more pixelated at 1080i than at 480p for some reason.  So in fact 1080i is really only of use for the interface.

I did a clean install with the 2-1-2004 build and I lost the ability to change to 720p and 1080i. Could someone assist me in getting those settings back?

Or is it not supported in the newest build?

nm...figured it out. somehow my 480,720, and 1080 settings in the xbox dash got turned to off...works fine now.

I use 720p on my plasma....no small text issues with that res. And it just looks awesome!

from what I have seen and understand the only thing that is 1080i is the GUI.
any Movie you watch will only be 480P at best unless its from some other source than DVD (HD source material is hard to get) becuase the xbox is not a scaler.

If this is not true please explain.

1080i and 720 p Movie files are not hard to get at all and in fact are all over, In fact its so easy to record them over the air and from the cable boxes. I record HBO HD all the time

As far as 720p and 1080i I too can confirm that XBMC does 1080i and 720p and for some odd reason upconverts the movies someway somehow to those respective formats, Looks 10 times better then just regular 480p for some reason. And I do know that DVD is not HD so that is very strange but good I might add. But sure as shit its a 720 and 1080i signal!!!

Gomerpyle....what settings ur using to get that great quality?

I have my XBMC running in 720p mode with "use best rez" enabled.

Would this setting upconvert a commercially pressed DVD to display in 720p (or 1080i if I changed it to that)?

TIA

Well you should probably tell that to everyone with HTPCs who use them to upconvert everything from DVDs to analog TV. If your TV supports higher resolutions natively then everything should look better at a higher resolution. About HBO HD I bet some of their movies are upconverted but there are probably a lot that aren't, remember there is a format called DVHS that can hold full 720p or 1080i movies. A lot of the preceived quality improvements are from filters interpolating the missing visual data, while in no way better then having a natively high resolution it's still better then nothing.

I did not say there is no way to record HDTV as it is broadcast.  Yes there are those pc HDTV Tuner cards that can record OTA DTV; but can the XBOX play them at the bitrate necessary to  display HDTV? I dont know and dont think so.  If you can provide a file in one of the usaul places I'd like to test it, as I dont own a HDTV capture tuner for my pc.

Please explain how you capture HDTV from cable box this I have never heard of.

go to windows media and download the HD samples for windows media, they have 1080i and 720p.  I played them on my pc through a DVi connector to my TV and they were in HD and looked beautiful.  I copied the WMVs over to the xbox and it ran both in their respective resolutions, my tv decoded them they exact same as if they were from my pc, the only difference was the 24 fps on the xbox, but they were truly 1080i and 720p signals.

what did you use to play the wmv's?  I tried doing that with the coral adventure (or whatever it was) and it didn't play through XBMC at all.

I think you are the only person to get that to work on a xbox.

I tried and all I get is sound not 1 frame of picture.
My box just goes black then back to my video folder.
Then the sound plays and thats all folks.

But this topic is so confusing.
I'm sticking with my gut on this: There is know way to play back HD content (720p and 1080i) on an xbox.

The only thing at 1080i is the GUI.
Your tv might say it is in HD Mode but I think thats only becuase the aspect ratio is forcing it.  The actual source material is what it is, and is not being up-converted.
Its similar to Viewing a 480p animorphic DVD and turning on vertical compression on the TV set.  The Picture is in HD aspect and the Compression makes it look sharper because its smaller; but it still is only a 480p DVD.

But whatever gives you the best viewing experience is up to you and I'm thankfull for the developers that have given us so much to discuss

With the 2/12 build, I can now play the T2 clip in 1080i but not 720p, although the sound is kinda messed up. Corel Reef won't play in 1080i or 720p.
Also, not really impressed with the T2 video quality, just doesn't look "HD" to the naked eyes.
