If this is supposed to be any kind of a serious effort, can we please get some information about each entry?

As it stands, we might end up with a VM.txt that does nothing but just barely get the games to run, with hardly any optimization done at all. What good would that do anyone?

For example:

Game Tengoku (Paradise) | gametngk 4 32 5

I have a 5 there because that's the least choppy setting I could find (yet it's still very choppy, to the point of unplayability). However, I didn't go past the start menu (didn't occur to me) during "distribute" settings 1 through 4, and 9 through 30, so there could very well be a better setting. Do 9-30 actually do anything? They're not listed in Xport's documents, so I ignored them.

Shoddy, fast work will help no one, guys. We all want our favourites to run as best they can, right?

Uh.... Did you guys even touch the settings at all? Both of these run on very standard settings, as explained in Xport's documentation.

SS runs at starswep 4 32 65535 but is so choppy, I don't think any "distribute" setting will save it. It reads from the harddrive absolutely constantly.

Tiger Road runs nicely at tigeroad 4 32 65535.

In the future; Read Xport's guide how to get games running and it'll save you a lot of time and trouble. It's pretty easy to learn and you'll benefit from knowing in the long run.

As far as my entry goes, most of them are just getting games that worked fine without VM in v0.76 to run in v0.84. The rest is mainly Konami GX games, which as far as I know run at full speed, and clones of existing entries in the original VM.txt (gunbirdj and s1945jn namely, the later one being heavy on frameskip at times, as usual with late Psikyo shooters).

Perhaps what is needed is some kind of online database system - similar to the one that was setup to list the games that gave memory errors.

If something like this was available then it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to then add an option to automatically generate and a vm.txt from the currently available data.

Just a thought

Can anyone shed light on if mame actually looks at the vm.txt as it seems to ignore it completely, do I need to print the thing off & enter all the settings by hand?

Oh, I didn't mean you. You can't help the guy posted your findings in this thread. Sorry if you took it that way. I still think I have a valid point, though. wink.gif

I also think Carcharius has a very valid point, and a good idea. I'd get started on it right away, if I only knew that kind of stuff. This is a monster job and nothing but co-operation is going to suffice, really, so something organized like that would be necessary.

No, you just need to turn off the "Force VMM" option in the menu. It overrides VM.txt, as far as I've seen.

I think Carcharius' idea is very good too, but wouldn't there be the need for someone to go thru entries, check them as to see there is no duplicate and yet if an entry was better than a previous one like Hosh suggested, it would not be lost ? That would be quite a bit of work for a poor soul...

[Edit : forgot a verb, whoops]
