search for a tool named XBXTools0.1.0.0.
This little app lets you convert *.dds and *.jpg to *.xbx

You can also use Bundler.exe that comes with the XDK.  It's the official tool to create packed resources.

actually, I got it.  for whatever reason, I've got to use the libSmpegX.lib file even if I don't use mp3s.

I didn't realize this, and perfectly valid code wasn't working.

I've made quite a bit of progress though. I've now got music working as well as sprites moving around the screen.
