if you have a monitor that supports sync on green its very cheap.

i d like to add aswell , if your using your xbox for regular use, games and such, this can be displayed on a monitor too, but you need to add a switch to your cable.

and if you want to be able to use it on a telly aswell you can run a vga bios from a disc, so its easy to switch between a vga bios and the standard ones.

well i made one, but the screen has a green hue, so my brother can deal with that. the only thing is ONLY X-DSL shows. i see theres a way to put a box on it, but it dosnt tell you what the chip is on the schematic.

the xbox dash wont show unless you run a vga bios, there is one made by frosty that boots from a disc, then your xbox dash should show up, oh yeah if you have a pal xbox yooou  have to switch the video to ntsc for the bootdisc to work.

vga bootdisc thread: http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=620760

to get linux to boot in colour your gonna have to fit a switch or some switches to let you enable different vga modes, and also for me i have to have it installed to the hard drive,  linux only shows up when i boot it from a cd in 2+3 mode.

read the vga bootdisc thread.

thats the guide i used, basically when switch 1+3 are on i can boot linux vga, and when switches 2+3 are on i can boot the xbox vga. the switches dont have to be fitted to the xbox, my switches are fitted to the cable itself, its more an adaptor than a cable.
