I was able to succeed by using waffletools. I extracted and burned it to my evox CD and ran its dashboard using Boxplorer. When I did the install, it failed part way through, leaving my C: drive wiped clean!  But I had a backup and I was able to open the XML file and do everything manually.  That got me to a point where the Xbox could boot my evox CD without the modchip installed.  From there, I already had the write protect jumpers soldered on my motherboadr, so I updated the onboard TSOP to the X2 bios, and my Xbox was modded!
