Tutorial For Font/audio Exploit
« on: December 30, 2003, 05:50:00 AM »

i've had many problems installing font on my xbox. some of the tutorials talk about hex editing and although i know how to do it, it just seemed like a hassle. i wanted to put font on but always feared the dreaded clock loop when i moved my box. i’m writing this tutorial to help people like me who just want to do it an easy way and a simple way. my first tutorial, here goes.

things you will need:
pbl 1.3.5i
x2 4977 bfm bios
EDIT: for boxes w/ the Focus Chip us X2 4981.06 bfm bios
bigfonts25
audio_sl_audio-key.zip
EDIT: or use grospolina's stable audio hack: Stable ST.DB (4th Post)
evox 1.8.3752 (one i used)
a way to ftp to your xbox (ma or 007)
*i did mine on a 1.3/1.4 box with a 4920 dash*

first we need to sign our pbl with font and audio. extract pbl 1.3.5i to two separate directories on your pc (name them pbl 1.3.5i font and pbl 1.3.5i audio…reduces confusion). using xbedump, sign the default.xbe with –font. (to use xbedump copy it to your pbl directory and load it up in ms-dos. type xbedump default.xbe –font) it will create a out.xbe file. delete the default.xbe and rename out.xbe as default.xbe. it is now signed with font. now do the same with the audio pbl directory you have created, only sign it with –audio. you are now ready to begin loading files onto your xbox.

so well start with font first. load up ma or 007 to ftp to your box. once you are have the evox screen, ftp in and go to the C:\root directory. open C:\fonts folder. copy bert.xtf and ernie.xtf over from your pc to the C:\fonts folder. next, make copies of you xbox book.xtf and xbox.xtf files to your pc hd. rename them xbox book.org and xbox.org respectively. copy them back to your C:\fonts folder. rename your existing xbox book.xtf and xbox.xtf to xbox book.xft and xbox.xft. you are done with loading bigfonts25 onto your xbox.

open up the pbl 1.3.5i folder signed with font on your pc. copy the files to your C:\root directory of your xbox. pbl is now on your xbox.

next on your pc, extract x2 4977 bfm bios into a folder. rename the file to xboxrom.bin. copy the file over to your xbox to the C:\bioses folder.

now copy the evoxdash.xbe and evox.ini (with your configured network settings) to your xbox C:\root.

the font hack is now installed on your xbox. reboot and the phoenix logo should appear booting you into evox.

now we will put the swapless audio hack onto your box.

open the pbl directory you signed with audio. copy the files in the directory to your E:\root directory. rename the default.xbe file to linux.xbe. also, open the folder on your pc where you renamed x2 4977 bfm to xboxrom.bin. copy that file over to your xbox to the E:\bioses directory.

next unzip audio_sl_audio-key.zip to a folder on your pc. on your xbox, navigate to the E:\TDATA\fffe000\music folder. there, rename the st.db file to st.org.db. copy it over to your pc in a backup folder. now copy the st.db file from the audio_sl_audio-key folder you unzipped. you are now done with the audio hack.

now you can use my evox.ini as a guide to set up how to turn on/off the audio/font hacks:

i hope some people find this tutorial helpful. i just got lazy loading the audio hack with a cd all the time, and didn’t want to put the font hack on because i didn’t want the clock loop when i unplugged my box. now i can boot into evox directly and turn off the font hack if i need to move my box.

big thanks goes to aaanti for all his help. i owe pretty much all this to him. thanks again buddy.

Edit: last line of code thanks to grospolina.

This is a pretty good method, but it could be better. The way it is right now, if you turn on the font exploit, it doesn't actually turn off the audio exploit. In other words, both exploits are enabled. The disadvantage with this is that you still can't rip audio tracks for your games. Just make sure that you rename your original ST.DB file to ST.ORG.DB. Do this with your font exploit OFF. Do NOT rename your hacked ST.DB to ST.HACK.DB. It's also nice to have a copy of the original fonts and name them "Xbox.XFT" and "XBox Book.XFT" and patch your dash to point to XFT (XTF2XFTPatcher works well, I hear). That way, you'll have a dashboard that works whether the font exploit is on or off.

for example, say you are in the pbl font folder...copy xbedump to the pbl font folder. run it in msdos. navigate to the directory from dos, and type xbedump default.xbe -font. if you copied xbedump to the same folder of the default.xbe you are signing is, out.xbe will be created there. then just delete default.xbe and name out.xbe default.xbe. hope this helps.

do yo extract the pbl 1.3.5i rar twice, onec into a fil named pbl 1.3.5i font and anothe to pbl 1.3.5i audio and then copy the file xbedump.exe into each of those dir if so does this file(xbedump) get copied later when copying to the c: on xbox?

could u post some screen shots of what the xbox dirs are supposed to look like??

oh, by the way for anyone having trouble with xbedump.. open c: prompt and get to dir of file(cd..) type xbedump default.xbe -wb
for some reason aftre i did that the i followed the instruction above, then it worked,, i think . i get a file named out.xbe but im still not getting evox to work

yes that is a good way to keep confusion to a minimun. extract pbl twice, once into a folder called PBL Font and a second called PBL Audio. Once you sign the default.xbe with font and audio into thier respective folders, you can delete xbedump if you'd like. you do not need to transfer xbedump to your xbox.

i'm not sure how to take screenshots of programs...but i can give you a basic idea.
my C drive looks like this:

xboxdashdata.10027100
xodash
[Files]
bg.jpg
boot.cfg
default.xbe
evox.ini
evoxdash.xbe
font.jpg
pheonix2d_logo1.jpg
settings_adoc.xip
xbox book.xtf
xbox.xtf
xboxdash.xbe
my E drive:

UData
[Files]
bg.jpg
boot.cfg
font.jpb
linux.xbe
pheonix2d_logo1.jpg

for example...if you sign default.xbe -a (for audio) it will create a file called out.xbe which is audio signed. delete the original default.xbe and rename out.xbe to default.xbe.

and don't worry about asking questions. that's why i wrote this.

if you want you can just copy my evox.ini i posted there and change it to your liking. all you would have to change is the network settings and menu options. ie..."gooses games" can be whatever you want.

and my box is unfortunately the original hd.  sad.gif pretty soon i'll have an 80gig though...hopefully.

xftdash.xbe is a hacked m$ dash. i did not make my own, but there is a tutorial on how to do this.

the only reason for the xftdash is to get to the m$ dash from evox.

without it you just can't access the m$ dash. mine is currently not working...so if i never need the m$ dash i just turn font off and boot to audio.

ok i got a modded one is mine that works great!(i want it the same) the other one and its unmodded is not mine and my friend just wants 2 play halo on it cuz it doesnt read anything
(dvd-drive dead).

so... if i just put the matrix chip and my workin dvd-drive in the virgin box (temporarily), put evox cd in, and then could i transfer this expliot over and take the matrix chip out and the good dvd-drive out??? (sorry if i am trying to make this complicated but i dont have a mem card or 007/MA) thanx

(remember the dead drive wont read anything so it has to boot up to evox without MA/007/Audio CD) also this box will be unplugged many times because of Halo 4-16player. thanx for all the help

um, i think it would work...

if you install your chip and dvd drive in the virgin box, boot to evox and install the exploit, then take out the matrix and dvd drive it should work.

i know boxes can't hot swap hd's, but i don't see why a dvd drive would't work.

if you do this though, make sure it boots without the chip. post your progress.

good luck.
