Hotswap should work. The other reasons I listed would have prevented the modded box from booting it. I'd go with xboxhdm and a PC to see if you can get into it that way. Honestly you should hear it click when it unlocks and it should be unlocking /unlocked the whole time as it is trying to read it.

Sometimes an xbox with a borked softmod will still boot games, and in those cases you can sometimes use an XBL-eneabled game to reinstall the MS dash so that may be another thing to try
