X-B.I.T news
>> From dms-x-bit.com:
QUOTE

We can finally announce that the confirmed release date for the X-B.I.T is September 28th 2003. We

relalise that the initial information was posted mid July, but we have spent a lot of time ensuring

that the manufacturing process assures quality products and we also spent a lot of time testing and

enhancing the PC software to make sure that it runs smoothly on the most recent PC operating

systems.

We are first to bring a fully functioning USB flashing system to the scene, together with an

unprecedented flash memory capacity which will offer greater compatibility for future BIOS

versions. The X-B.I.T has been fully tested on V1.0-V1.3 XBX's and found to function perfectly.

We are sure that users will find the PC software easy and convenient to use. The POGO solution also

improves on other manufacturers designs, by offering spiked pins to connect properly with the D0

bridge. The pin header solution and pre soldered wire solutions are available as no extra cost

option (included), for experienced installers. Initial qty's will be limited, but we will

manufacture steadily and constantly throughout the busy period to keep up with huge demand.

You can clearly see the difference between the normal pogopins used for the LPC points and the

spiked pogopin for "d0" (there are 2 "d0" pogopins, so the modchip works with both xbox board

designs)

DMS X-B.I.T review
>> After several days of testing ... here's my review of the X-B.I.T modchip:

Official DMS X-B.I.T website:
* http://www.dms-x-bit.com

Where to buy:
* divineo.co.uk (official reseller)

What's in the package:
* X-B.I.T modchip
* external adaptor with usb-connector, bios switches and enable/disable switch
* wires needed to connect X-B.I.T with external adaptor
* diod (for optional power-button support feature)
* screw and spacer (for pogopin/nosolder install)
* wire connector (for wire install)
* All packed in a static shielding bag

Pictures:
* (IMG:http://pictures.xbox-scene.com/4/xbit/01.jpg)
* (IMG:http://pictures.xbox-scene.com/4/xbit/02.jpg)
* (IMG:http://pictures.xbox-scene.com/4/xbit/03.jpg)
* (IMG:http://pictures.xbox-scene.com/4/xbit/04.jpg)

Install the Modchip:
DMS made all the installation guides, you can find them on their website:

http://www.dms3.com/xmanuals.htm.
You have the choice between 3 install methods:

* The PogoPin/Solderless install
Most people will probably install the X-B.I.T this way ... you pay for those pogopins, so might
aswell use them.

I was surprized how easy the pogopins aligned. I don't know how they managed to do it ... is it due
the spiked pogopins (for "d0" point), is it because the board is pretty large and fits around the
corner of the IDE connector (which also causes it to be stable)? ... anyway the modchip alligns
very easily. Just put the LPC pogopins on the LPC points, and the d0 pogopin is almost automaticly
correctly alligned.

The X-B.I.T has 2 spiked "d0" pogopins, so it installs soldeless on all xbox versions till xbox
v1.4 (power and ground are disconnected on LPC on xbox v1.5 ... so it will need 2 extra wires).
There's also no stability problem with the pogo-pins, they keep good contact with the LPC points
and with d0.

I installed it on a motherboard with 'empty' LPC holes ... but I think it will also align without
too many problems on filled LPC holes (v1.0 and early v1.1 only).

* The wire install
It's a typical wire-install for a LPC modchip. The X-B.I.T comes with a wireconnector, so you don't
have to solder any wire on the modchip itself ... only on the xbox motherboard.

* The Headerpin install
Honnestly I have no idea why DMS decided to ship the X-B.I.T with a male headerpin soldered
directly on the modchip.

While the actual install method stays the same ... it takes away all advantages of the headerpin
(easy to swap/upgrade, mass flash modchips, easy to remove, ...)

For those who already installed a male-male headerpin in their xbox and don't want to solder to
upgrade to X-B.I.T, there's only 1 solution ... get a female-female headerpin block at your local
electronic shop.

If you want to solder your X-B.I.T, I suggest you use the wire-install.

* Optional En/Disable with Xbox power button.
With 2 optional solderpoints (1 on modchip, 1 on xbox motherboard) you can use the xbox power
button to enable/disable your modchip. If you press power button 1sec modchip will be enabled, if
you press power button 3sec your modchip will be disabled.

Testing:
The biggest new features on the X-B.I.T are:
- 2MB flash size
- PC flashing via USB

The PCB pogopins and ic's look very solid and of high quality.

The X-B.I.T can very easily be programmed with your PC using the USB port. You can download the
flashing software for free from http://www.dms3.com/xdownload.htm.

Because it's using USB, there will be no compatibility problem people had with LTP (parallel port)
programmers.

Also the modchip must not be installed to be programmed - it gets power from the USB. Their
software is fully grafical and very easy to use.

Programming/Erasing itself is alot slower then I expected using USB ... but Team DMS explained why
the flash speed is so slow here (because they use unshielded wires).
http://www.dms3.com/xfaq.htm

Xbox booted with the expected bios from the first try.
Bios swithching also worked correctly (1-3 switch on the exterenal adaptor). The bios selection is
explained here. http://www.dms3.com/xbit_bios_selection.htm

The 4th switch is the enable/disabled switch (they call it 'Stealth-Mode'). You have the choice
between these bios split-ups:
1. 1x2048k
2. 2x1024k
3. 2x512k 1x1024k
4. 2x256k 1x512k 1x1024k
5. 4x256k 1x1024
6. 4x256k 2x512k

On the external adaptor (that should be placed on the backside of the Xbox) there's a small led
that shows if your modchip is enabled or not ... very useful to check before you go on xlive.

The X-B.I.T allows flashing directly from the Xbox software as far as I know, but so far no xbox
program has support for the 2mb of the X-B.I.T. A new or updated (evo-x for example) program will
probably be released sooner or later. I tried to add the correct flash-line in the latest evo-x ...
but the program hang when I tried to flash ... I guess it doesn't like the 2mb file yet.

One feature missing is the 'flash protection' (there's a 'seal' on the X-B.I.T, but you have to
remove it to install the X-B.I.T ... so once installed your X-B.I.T is always flashable). But so
far MS has never tried to flash the bios ... and even if they did - you can always reflash your

X-B.I.T via USB. So this feature is certainly not essential.

POSITIVE:
+ 2MByte flash size
+ 6 different bios split-ups possible and upto 6 different bioses on chip.
+ PC flashing via USB (no compatibility problems)
+ High quality PCB board
+ External adaptor with bios selector and en/disable switch+led
+ 3 ways to install it - you can choose
+ Pogopin/soldeless install: aligns very easily and stable
+ Wire-install: using connector so no need to solder on modchip
+ Optional en/disable with power-button

NEGATIVE:
- Very slow USB flashing/erasing
- HeaderPin install: Male headerpin soldered directly on X-B.I.T motherboard
- No flash disable (but you can flash via USB ... so it's really no must-have feature)
- Bug in flash software if you put window to background (will be solved soon)
- Can't flash directly with Xbox software yet (needs update of evo-x probably).

Feel free to post your questions/remarks/reviews about the X-B.I.T on our forums

X-B.I.T PC-Flash software problems on WindowsXP with NEC chipset
>> From www.dms3.com/xnews.htm:
QUOTE

We got informed that a few people have problems using the X.B.I.T PC-Flash software on systems

running Windows®XP.

It took a while to investigate that problem but we think we have found the reason now:
We have tested the PC-Flash software together with the X-B.I.T hardware successfully on several PCs

running Windows®XP. We can confirm that the problem is not only caused by the operation system

itself. The error occurs when using Windows®XP together with a certain "NEC" chipset on your

PC-mainboard. However this is a problem which is very difficult to track down since we can not test

the software on all the different combinations of operation systems and chipsets out there. Due to

the large number of different chipset manufacturers it might turn out that there is another

combination of Windows®XP and a chipset which could cause similar issues.

We tracked down the problem and we will have a patch ready for you latest on monday the 13th.

Unfortunately we will have to reprogram the USB-controller of the X-B.I.T if you are using

Windows®XP together with a chipset which is causing the PC-Flash software to lock up. If that is

the case please send back your X-B.I.T to your supplier, we will reprogram/exchange all devices

quickly. We are sorry for the inconvenience but please be aware that we designed our product

according to the official USB standards and that the problem is not caused by us however some PC

hardware manufacturers do not go inline with those standards.

If you are using Windows®XP and if you have problems with the PC-Flash software please let us know

the type of chipset and PC-mainboard you are using. Rest assured that we will offer support through

our distributors and reslove all issues.

X-BIT in production again + new guides for xbox v1.5
>> From dms3.com:
QUOTE

The second wave of shipments started at the beginning of this week. We would like to thank all the

people waiting so long for their shipments. Thanks for your patience and your understanding. We

also updated the manuals section with the v1.5 alternative solder points for 5V and GND.

Unfortunately the v1.5 consoles cannot be modified without soldering at the moment but we already

designed a cable which can be plugged onto the existing X-BIT mainboard. The cable will be ready

for delievery in a few weeks and will get bundled with future shipments. The cable will be

compatible with the current X-BIT version.

X-B.I.T and Xbox v1.5 news
>> From dms3.com: http://www.dms3.com/xnews.htm
QUOTE

After finally receiving a v1.5 console we can now confirm that the X-B.I.T can be installed on v1.5 consoles without soldering. We are sorry for the misinformation in the foregoing news post. We actually never had a v1.5 console in our hands, we were only relying on information from the public. The LPC port on the v1.5 consoles is no longer providing GND and 3v3. This is why other modchips need to be connected to the according points on the mainboard by soldering or using special adapters. The X-B.I.T is operating with a 5v supply voltage which is still available on the LPC port. The GND connection gets established by screwing the X-B.I.T on the board. Please ensure that you only use the bundled screw and spacer.

We can therefore confirm that the X-B.I.T is a completely solderless solution for v1.0 - v1.5 consoles as it is from the first day of it's release. No additional cables or adapters are needed. We removed the misleading information from the former posts.

We would just like to remind customers that the new X-B.I.T V1.5 requires the V1.5 software applications, it will not work with 1.0 apps. Furthermore, the user will no longer have to snap the seal or write protect tab, since each piece is pretested with Linux BIOS before shipment, therefore we snap the tabs during testing and before the X-B.I.T's are packaged ready to be shipped. This is a change in procedure since the 1.0 days, to ensure that each X-B.I.T functions 100% correctly.

X-B.I.T v1.5 Sample Pictures
>> We received a sample this week of the X-B.I.T v1.5 from Divineo.
The new X-B.I.T version has some optimizations compared to v1.0: it now has an Actel chip (instead of Laticce), a faster USB bus, a new updated win32 PC tool, improved power/ground for Xbox v1.5 and a lower retail price.
It's still fully solderless for xbox v1.0-v1.5 and both wires and headerpin install are also still possible. There will also be an adapter sold separatly (not yet released) for Xbox v1.6 that will require 9 wires to solder.
Here are some pictures of the X-B.I.T v1.5 already - review will follow later:
