'installation Failed' - Mech Exploit

Anyone ever get 'Installation Failed' while doing the 'install linux' command thru Mech Assault?  I verified that I have an 'older' version of MA which should technically allow the exploit..  I can see my 3 save games on my USB device..  I can log into the emergency linux shell just fine..  

It seems to fail just about a second or two into the progress bar where it says 'installing linux boot loader'..

I have an unmodded, fairy new console.  (manufactured 9/2003)
