Ok, first of all, the HDD timeout is probably being caused because the dvd drive isnt working.  That is the problem that I see the most often.  Make sure your jumpers are set to master on the HDD and slave on the DVD drive.  

Second, buy a modchip if you are going to fuck with it.  Then you dont have to worry about a lot of stuff and you can get away without having the dvd drive on.
