Usb Controller Cable Mod Problems
« on: November 30, 2003, 06:11:00 PM »

I decided I wanted to try and use my xbox controller on my pc so I fallowed THIS
tutorial.  I connected corresponding wires adn then plugged into my PC.  Nothing happens.  My PC doesnt even recognize that something was plugged in.
What should I do to fix it?
I have the drivers for teh controller installed (which one is the best, I dloaded them all?) and everything but I just wont work.
What is wrong?

thank you

Windows should have picked up a usb device and be prompting you to supply a driver path.

Stick in another usb device to make sure the PC is behaving itself. and then RE-do the wire joins to make sure there are not any bad connections.

Post some photos of your solder job (macro), don't be shy as we must have seen the worst solder attempts on this board allready.

I'm not sure if non M$ controllers are ok for this mod. I have only ever done it to M$ branded ones.

I am pretty sure the usb plug on my pc is fine.  I have tried the cable in all of the four usb slots, even the one that my printer is currently working off of.

As far as the solder job, I didnt solder the wires, I twistd them together and then used some heat shrink tubing to secure them.  Could that be the reason for my problems?

Should I undo the heat shrink and actually solder them?

okay,
colors of usb cable are matched to colors of xbox breakaway cable.
S controller plugged into xbox breakaway and usb plug plugged into front USB port on my PC.
The USB port works because I plugged my printer into it to test it out.
when I plug the controller in nothing happens.  It doesnt even recognize that a device is plugged in.

I really wanna make this work you guys
Ive checked wire connections over and over and still nothing!
I really dont understand!!!

edit:
one last thing
I tried using my microcon controller also and it doesnt work. One thing about made me think that maybe there is no power going to the controller form the usb port.  You see, when i press the macro button it doesnt light up or anythign which tells me there is no power.
What should I check?

So you think I should try to connect the white wire from the usb plug to the yellow wire in my controller cable?
If taht isnt right will it short anythign out if I try it?

mad hamster,
I did what you said by connecting the yellow wire in the cable to the white wire in the usb plug but still I get nothing
Would any of the other colors being switched be the problem?

I think I found the problem

I was testing the wires on the usb plug and found everything to be fine but then I went to test teh part of the breakaway cable I had been using.  I found that one of the pins was broken off  in the conector,  and I had to stick the probe of my meter way back in the back of the plug to get contact.
Think that would be the problem?
maybe the plug isnt making good enough contact with the male end of the controller plug and thus not being recognized by the PC?

I cant believe so much headache over such a trivial thing.  A fucking pin!!

I used another breakaway cable, this tiem I made sure all the pins were intact and presto!!! sweet success.  I installed teh drives and I think it is working and stuff.

One thing though, the main reason I wanted to do this was so I could play unreal tournament with my FPS controller. However, unreal doesnt seem to want to let me use the controller.  Any Idea what I can do about tah?

Try using this onehttp://www.grooveyar...om/projects/xid
I dont think i used that one though. If you go to the adapters for xbox on lik-sang.com they have links to some drivers.
