You have used a 4meg flash chip so you need to flash it with the last part of the split 1meg bios

I had the same problem. It probably has nothing to do with the length of you wires. Most motherboards can't flash chips larger than 2mbit. I got this directly from the developer who wrote uniflash:

it's because your board can't support 512KB chips. I have that chip too and haven't seen any board yet that can flash it. The topmost address line that is needed to address full 512KB is where VPP (programming voltage) used to be on older chips - most boards have 5V or 12V there (12V will probably kill this chip) instead of the address line.
