Well, I for one don't want the XBOX v1.6 since I will be buying a new xbox soon. I have made this guide from the 39 page thread I read today at this link, I credit everyone who contributed in that thread since it's just too many people to list.


The Complete Idiot's Guide to Detecting XBOX v1.6

1) Before buying the XBOX and bringing it home

A. Looking at the Manufacture Date

CONCLUSION: Anything AFTER (3-18-2004) is MOST LIKELY a v1.6

B. Looking at the Serial Number

Find out the production line of the Xbox, which is the first digit of the serial number. Then find out the year and week or your Xbox. The first digit of the second block is the last digit of the year (i.e. 2 or 3 for 2002 or 2003), and the following two digits are the number of the week. For example, the serial "1111111 31205" is from week 12/2003.

All people who have 1.6's who have released their serial number all have the product line of 6 and the region 05 (China).

You want to check the serial numbers on the back of the box of the XBOX and compare them with the following above. First compare the first and last 2 numbers, if those are correct then it's like I said above, probabaly a 1.6. If you still want to makesure, try to see how identical the serial numbers are between the first and last 2 numbers to other XBOX's to be positive you have the 1.6 as well!

C. Font of the Sticker

2) After you bought the XBOX/now at home and want to check it before you open it

A. Looking at the XBOX Credits Screen (XBOX must be turned ON)

Scroll all the way down to the end of the Credits Screen in the XBOX Dashboard...

All 1.6's that have been noted come with kernel 5838.

B. Shining a flashlight through the side vent

You can shine a flashlight through the side vent and view the LPC (middle vertically and left horizonally in that picture), the series of 16 holes. If you have a 1.6, if will look exactly like that... if not, the 4th hole will be closed (which is a v1.4). You might be able, with a strong flashlight, peek through the side vents and see the LPC area. If you can spot the BIOS TSOP, you likely do not have a 1.6.

C. Opening the DVD-ROM Drive

All XBOX v1.6's have been noted to have the PHILIPS DVD-ROM DRIVE.
Open the DVD-ROM drive and check the Tray to see what drive it is...

3) Checking the back of the XBOX
Check the rubber feet on the bottom, they are said to be thinner and easy to pull back with the XBOX v1.6 compared to previous XBOX's. However there has been note that the same rubber feet are there for v1.3+

4) Deciding to Open the XBOX and makesure

Question: I want to avoid getting a v1.6 XBOX and I want a v1.4/below XBOX instead!
ANSWER: The best way in detecting an XBOX v1.4/below....

1) Makesure the KERNAL isn't 5838 when you turn on the XBOX at home, in the end of the credits screen.

2) It is POSSIBLE to get a v1.4 during the manufacture date of March..

CONFIRMED XBOX v1.4

Manufacture date is 03-16-2004.

Most likely the production line for a v1.4 will be a 3 and the region code will be 06 (China). This definately shows it's not a v1.6 since all of them have been shown to have a production line of 6 and a region of 05 (China).

I wish I could credit everyone, but it's honestly too many people. I first wanted to make this for myself since I'll be hunting for a NON-XBOX v1.6 and a Samsung Drive which won't be easy. This is all the data I have gathered up to detecting an XBOX v1.6 and most of it hasn't been confirmed. They are all stipulations, use the data wisely.

Major correction - there's no relationship between version and DVD-ROM type.. I can't DISPROVE that all 1.6's have a Phillips, but I can't prove it either.. but my point would be that in every older version of the Xbox, Phillips drives pop up as well, making it a moot point for version detection.

I disagree with the 05 06 thing. My XBOX was manufactured in China2 (06) and it's a 1.6.

This is a very good guide. I am sure that nobody will have trouble knowing if their Xbox is a 1.6 or not.

My 1.6 has a samsung in it from factory. But then again I just opened it to find the version.

Just thought I'd contribute here in case any new users still don't know how to spot a v1.6 within a few seconds, and not have to open it up.

Simply look at the a/v port in the back. If the bottom of the connector has metal shielding exposed, its a v1.6. If its all plastic, its one of the older models.
