Region Free Dvds, Poor Playback On Region 2 Player
« on: January 13, 2003, 03:59:00 AM »

Question - I have a 1.0 Xbox, not modded or anything yet,
I have some region free dvd's that play on my machine, BUT
the picture is jerky, almost like it looks on slower PC's and the CPU cant keep up!

Answer 1
NTSC DVDs on a PAL XBox only playback in PAL 50 irrespective of the PAL 60 setting in the MS Dashboard (this only affects games). You need to get that Video Switcher disc for modded consoles if you wish to watch NTSC R0 discs

Answer 2
ntsc playback can be jerky on a pal xbox. Make sure that its set to pal 60hz mode, which seems to help a bit. Other than that, you would have to have a modded box so that you can use the video selecter disk, which lets you switch your box to ntsc and back again.

Perhaps something is wrong with your DVD drive. The Xbox's PAL to NTSC conversion is excellent, and rivals that of a $300 Malata DVD player. There may be some minor visual anomalies during high action scenes, but the Xbox outperforms most "region free" players on the market (Apex, Daewoo, etc...)
