@blindgoat...  You have to have a modded box to be able to play games on CD-R, DVD-R, etc

Hi, I am a Noob and I am going to buy an Xbox next week and then mod it.
I see you all talk about many kind of DVD drives, so I want to know, If I go to the store and buy an Xbox how can I see which drive it has? Cause you all say the Samsung drive is the best one.

if mine reads CD-Rs from the MS dash, does that mean it will play burnt CD-R games?  also when i burn them and put them into the xbox will they just load like a normal game should or would a need an app to run it?

For all of you like me who have Thompson Drive, if you have Nero burner stick in an Imation CD-RW, burn it, stick it in your Xbox, and it will read perfectly

Kain17.... If your planning to buy an XBOX, you can't tell, in anyway, what drive it has installed untill you void your warranty and open your xbox or use an exploit.

It seems that "most" units made in 2002 have samsung drives. I have seen a samsung drive in an early 2003 unit aswell.

I look for "REFURBISHED" XBOX's' that were made in 2002 and have been refurbished by MS and purchase those at a cheaper price. At the moment, they are selling here in Australia for $161.

Most have Samsung drives, but i have had 2 that had Phillips drives, so obviously they had faulty Samsung drives and hence why they were refurbished.

I'm not reading through all of these posts, but I can tell you the first one is BS! I play backups on CD, no point in wasting a DVD when it fits easy on a CD smile.gif

I think that my local best buy has nothing but samsung xboxs.

Anywho, I just burned an audio cd (File format: ogg vorbis, burn speed: 16x) and my samsung drive refuses to read it. Am I burning it too fast or something? Is there any specific brand that the samsung drive prefers? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Get yourselves an x-box with a Samsung drive !!!
They have only started using these drives since October 2002.
It has read every type of CDR I have placed in it  biggrin.gif

I just got a new X-box today. (Long story short, Hurricane killed my v.1.1) has this drive. And, currently. I'm going to call this bull.

Of course, I've only tried one of my CD-R's (Memorex) in it, but still. It doesn't read everything

MFG: 07-16-04

Dunno if they changed since 2002 or what but my two cents.

NOTE: Not all x-box's manufacted in October use the Samsung drive  sad.gif
I have found most manufactured on the 5th and 15th to be Samsung though.
Still, it's pot luck.

How can you tell it's a Samsung ???
You can tell it is a Samsung drive when you open the tray.
It has two extra holes in the tray about the size of a thumb width.

I have the tompsan drive, and am wanting to run one of the newer dvd drives in it. Hopefully I can run the freakin samsung cd-rs I have because I dont feel like going to the store tomarrow to get dvd-r.
