Are you using an XISO formated disc?  

Most likely you are using just data contents and have not create a xbox compliant dvd-r.

Yes, I am using xISO.  As long as I can get into the evox bios, the chip is setup correctly, right?

Yes, if you see purple logo at bootup your OK.

Now to track your media problem, have you tried another brand of DVD-R?  Also, for jokes can you read the DVD-R on your PC?
