2mb For Bios
« on: August 12, 2003, 01:07:00 PM »

I'm wondering if I am the only one thinking 2mb is way too much space for bios.  Personally, I think 256k is enough.  This will allow more freedom for bios developers, but it may cause problems for the competition, as this only seems to be for show, and will not add any real capability to the chip.

Well, that's my opinion.  What's yours?

i think you really only need a 1 MB bios:

*original bios
*dev bios
*x2 4977 bios
*linux bios

is there something you can do with the other MB of storage?

I don't think there's that much use for it, but I don't see any reason why not.  Some people might need different versions of different bioses and the larger chip will let them have easier access to them without flashing.

i guess you could use the other 1MB if you have debug bios + vga debug bios + x3 (if its 512KB) and then some other 512KB bios. but i dont think anybody will need that. i bought the x2 pro for that reason...so i could use vga bios and regular x2 bios, but i scraped the vga idea and only use 1 256KB bank

this chip would only be needed by a developer.

Yes, but its a pogopin chip, and judging by the reliability of pogopins in the past, I doubt any developers will run out to get it.  That's another reason behind my judgement.

overkill, they just added it to try and make their chip appear to be better then the xecuter line..

im sorry, i dont care who you are, you dont need 7 bios's and a bios that is 2mb will never come out.

Having the 2MB flash ROM isn't a detriment to the chip.  Purchasing in such bulk may bring the cost difference down to being negligible.  Also, is it hurting anyone?  Certainly not.

My only thought is that a 2MB flash ROM shouldn't be a keystone in DMS' marketing platform as the advantages of it may be scant, if there are any.

If the price range is going to be the same as the other good chips I dont see how anyone would not want the extra space?
It also looks like they are droping the price on these chips again. So if the price is the same as the others I think it would be the best choice for now.

Why does it seem like so many people want to bash this chip? Because it has extra space? That to me would be a bonus if the price is the same plus it has usb flashing which is a plus. I dont see any downside to it unless the price is higher than the others, and like I said above it looks like the price is droping once again.

huh.gif .

X-S has kindly given X-Bit its own forum here, so it would be great if a DMS member would show up to give us some of the goods on this product. With over 50,000 members here, X-S is the most popular, most frequently browsed site on the web for the Xbox (underground and mainstream) - seems like a good place to chat up your product and create some warm and fuzzy feelings towards your potential customer base.... but what do I know?

Oh... one other point: The price differential is not very much between a 1MB flash and a 2MB flash (Less than US$1); in fact, under certain circumstances, the 2MB flash might even be CHEAPER for them.

So from a pure business standpoint, it didn't really add to the overall price to make 2MB a feature on the chip.
