Standby LED tutorial

by Silenoz123

This tutorial is to show you how to add a "standby" LED to your xbox similar

to the one on the ps2. The LED indicates that there is power to the xbox even

though it is turned "off". there are numerous ways you can do this:

A. Power=OFF - LED=ON POWER=ON - LED=OFF
B. BICOLOR - POWER=OFF - COLOR1 POWER=ON - COLOR1+2
C. ALWAYS ON - POWER=OFF - LED=ON POWER=ON - LED=ON

this tutorial is for A. I assume you can fit the pieces together for the

other methods ;)

You will need:
Soldering iron+Solder, heatshrink tubing(or electrical tape)
2(or 3 if you do bicolor) lengths of wire
Single color(or bicolor) LED - i used a 3mm 1.7v red LED
resistor(if LED is <3.3v or you want to dim the LED)
1/8" drill bit

Steps:

1. Solder one length of wire to the anode(+)(longer side) on the LED to the

end of one length of wire, solder resister here too if necessary.  Solder the

cathode(-) to one end of the other length of wire.

you should have this:

A.
      LED
   ___( )___
  |               |
  |               |
Anode(+)  Cathode(-)
  |               |
  |               |
Resistor       |
  |               |
3.3v(stb)  3.3v(on)

2. Connect the anode to the 3.3v(standby) and the cathode to 3.3v(on) using

any method you want. i just simply let the stripped ends of my wires make

contact with the connectors by just pushing them in next to them. for a more

secure connectuon you can solder.  The 3.3v(stb) will always have current

flowing through it while the 3.3v(on) is grounded when the xbox is turned off

thus making a complete circuit.  when you switch the xbox on, 3.3v(on) sends

current through it and is no longer ground thus making an incomplete circuit.

3. drill a hole anywhere in your case to mount the LED if you desire. 1/8" is

perfect for 3mm LEDs. 3/16" for 5mm

4. Never "zap" yourself on the PSU again! ;)

pics of my finished product(it looks much better in person i promise :) ):

OFF: Notice the red LED in the top right corner right below the hdd activity LED

ON: Now notice the red LED is off

I don't need a light to tell me when my xbox ISN'T on, the lack of a light being on already tells me that.
