Well, my friend dropped off his softmodded xbox and mortal kombat deception because it wasnt working. What happens is after the intro movie it says something about loading the profile and says press start. I press start and then it freezes and makes a buzzing noise (from the tv)...
Is there a way to fix this?

Is he running off the HDD or a DVD-R or retail? If it's a DVD-R how did he back it up?
When I backed up MKD with Qwix it did'nt work. Kept getting DDE's. But then I rebacked it up using Moogui optimization and it worked perfect. Loaded and played exactly like the original.
As far as playing off the HDD I have'nt tried that yet.

it doesnt work from retail disc or from the hdd (ripped through dvd2xbox) it also doesnt work on my xbox (which is also soft-modded)

Then I would say he got a defective original disc. It does happen from time to time. See if he can return the original and get another one.

Do you think it might be trying to read the cracked fonts or something?

No this game doesn't attempt to access the font files. And even if it did it would bring up an error screen not lock the box up.

Ok, guys im bringing this back. Theres a lot of trouble...
So far, these games are not working:
Mortal Kombat Deception
Snowblind
Rainbow Six Black arrow
ESPN 2k5
Need for Speed Underground 2
Project Gotham Racing 2

Remember, we have soft-modded xboxs with ltools 1.7.5, these games dont work on all the modded xbox i have soft-modded with ltools 1.7.5 using mechassult. I think they have some sort of protection and most came out pretty recent.
I have the x2 4983 bios with pbl

thats great, but all the xboxs i have softmodded are having problems with these games... any ideas?

I'm not sure other then try updating your bios. Or go to a kernal patcher like Nkpathcher 10.

I'm running Mortal Kombat Deception, Need For Speed Underground 2, and Project Gotham Racing 2 all from my HDD with no troubles at all. The retail disks as well as my backup disks are all playing fine with my softmod as well.

i dont have any of the games that dont work, ill borrow one from one of my friends to see if i can get it to work. i dont see any newer bios then x2 4983, and doesn't pbl work fine?

Yes, have you tried deleting the game saves for those games to see if that works? When I upgraded my HDD in my box I had to delete a few gamesaves for games. Otherwise the games would just lockup the xbox when they'd start to load. But after deleting the gamesaves for those games they worked perfect.

mortal kombat didn't even have a save on my xbox and it froze, and snowblind my friend just got and he didnt have a save either, i also didnt have a save for project gotham racing... i have cleared the cache, but i didnt clear this folder called cache in the e drive, because i didn't hear anywhere you have to do that...

And whats the difference between 4983 and 4981? is 4983 less compatible?

me and one of the other guys are using UIX, and another guy is using avalaunch
