Xbox & Disc Burned With Pioneer 109/a09
« on: February 03, 2005, 01:58:00 PM »

I just read on the RPC1.org forums that a guy had problems with disc burned on the Pioneer 109/A09 working on his Xbox.

Has any of you guys bought a 109/A09 yet and tried the disc on your Xbox? Please tell us about your results if you have and if there were any problems.

Read more about it here.

One person having problems doesn't make it universal.  Anyways it's a safe bet that a decent firmware update will shortly be available for those having issues with their 109s.   wink.gif.  @tutyet  Verbatim is in the process of finalizing their specs on D/L DVD-R media at this point.  It should be out towards the end of this month or early next month. <

Where in my post did I mention anything about that?  Either way, if you pay extra to have this drive, the -R should work.  If all you care about is +R, then you are better off picking up an old + format only burner on ebay for dirt cheap.

I'm assuming the ridisc and datasafe were all -R. <

They could be either.  He didn't specify.  Usually Ridisc and Datasafe are re-labeled Ritek discs. <

I also have had problems with my Pioneer 109 burning xiso.
I used:
Fuji Film dvd-r 8X.
C-Xbox Tool
Nero 6.6
Pioneer 109 firmware 1.09

I have a modified Samsung drive so the Thompson problem is not an issue.
I have also heard that newer versions of Nero squeeze a few MB out of a disc and this could account for "Bad" Lead-in.  This is not just an isolated incident.

Confirmed not working with an Xbox.  My lead-in rings are normal size, but the Xbox does not recognize the disc.  Other devices read them fine.  Details below:

Xbox DVD Drive --> Samsung
Firmware tested --> 1.01, 1.05, 1.09
Media --> Ritek G04 DVD-R, Ritek G05 DVD-R

NewEgg will be getting this drive back and I guess I'll find another brand to be loyal to.  My 106 never failed (until this past week) on over 500 DVDs burnt.  I'm very disappointed.

Dude, you got a drive that hasn't been shipping for 30 days.  Now I agree,  a drive should work 100% out of the box, but my guess is a firmware update will solve the problems.

However, this is how Sony used to ship their drive (i.e. couldn't work right out of the box) and I do expect more out of Pioneer.   sad.gif

As for returning it, by the time a firmware update is out it may be to late to return the drive, and it could still be a hardware issue...so, I agree I would return the drive as well.  You can see in this post:  http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?sho...344230&hl=funky

I was about to buy that drive, but was chefelf convinced me to wait for a couple months after there would probably be a firmware update or two and an ample supply of DL DVD-Rs. <

I don't want to risk not being able to have a fully functional drive.  If I wait that time and the problem is not fixed, I won't have the ability to RMA the drive.  I just find it irritating that a company that has produced some of the best DVD burners (never heard of a problem with Pioneer before this) could ship a drive with such an issue, and have the issue still exist after 2 firmware upgrades. <

My guess is that Pioneer had to rush the drive a bit as there was alot of pressure on them to finally "put up or shut up" on the D/L DVD-R format.  So they might have released the drive a bit prematurely.  There already is a firmware update that is out for it.  Just released today.  I will see if I can't track it down for you folks and see if it does anything for ya. wink.gif

Hopefully it will fix the issue.  As for purchasing the 109, I couldn't find a 108 for LESS than the 109.  I knew the drive was brand new, but I didn't expect such problems. <

Well, nobody is perfect.  Take a look at how many times NEC drives fell flat on their faces at launch but became outstanding drives after a firmware update. wink.gif

Aha, here it is.  Not sure if it will fix the problem but it's worth a shot, right?
