D: is the root directory of the running application. Always. So, you're right, it's looking in the avalaunch dir.

To add stuff from DVD, just use N: instead.

actually, that's not the truth.

Dashboards are an exception of that rule, when it's loaded as a dash, it's pretty much never in d :  :-)
I've had b:, c: as well as e: and f:.  it's quite confusing, and we're tried stuff like scaning all drived for avalaunch.xml and other files, but it's not been very successive.

Kernlel check is the only proof way.  However, checking that it's not in the cdrom, would be a good idea before autolaunch :-)
