WHat will happen if I use a 512k image of the bios????

you will have a coaster. the X2 chip uses 1mb, you can split it into 2 512k images, but if you only flash 512k the bios will fail because it needs 1mb

then you should be safe and do the other 2 with the same, trust me it sucks to be down, but yes the programmer is a Great investment, it saves your butt , I bought one and never used it untill last night when I had an issue. and it worked great.
