Anyone Know What Type Of Media Xbox 2 Games Have?
« on: September 27, 2004, 08:57:00 PM »

The DC had GD, the PS2 has CD & DVD, the Xbox has DVD, and I heard the PS3 will use some type of multi-layer discs.  Any idea about the Xbox 2?

I doubt it will be Blu-Ray - PS3 is using that, and it is a mostly a Sony developed product.

Somehow I dont think MS wants sony to earn royalties on the xbox 2 smile.gif

PS3 will be using a blue ray disc that can hold about 100gb of data.  Sony also has a blue ray disc in development that can hold about 200gb of data.

From what I understand HD DVD can only hold abour 28 gb of data.

Who know what xbox 2 will use.    Maybe a 5 1/2" flopy disc.

I think it will be something closed to what PCs are using since XBOX2 and Pc gamers will be able to play on LIVE together that in 2006 so we still have a ways to go.

My picks, from most likely to least likely.
1. DVD.  It would cut the costs of the console considerably.
2. Blu-Ray-  Pretty much every company supports this standard, HDDVD only has two companies supporting it.  The argument that XBOX2 wont use it because Sony helped develop it doesnt hold water.  Sony also co-developed the CD, and that was used by many of its competitors.
3. HD-DVD  Possible, but not likely.  Blu-Ray seems to be winning the format battle, and MS wouldnt want to be stuck with a maching that is only compatible with the losing standard in the format war.

I think it would probably be DVD, the 100/200GB Blu-ray offers seems a bit OTT.  DVD offers the perfect amount of data storage.
The quality of games does not depend on how much data it takes up (look at 'the guy game').

hmm i dont know where the 100-200 gb figure came frm for blu-ray, i know of it being 25-30 gb, it uses blue laser instead of red ones, since blue light has a smaller wavelength than red, and hence can read more data. ps3 wil probly use this media, i am not sure about xbox; but it seems intial cames on both consoles wil probly be dual layered dvds.

I think I heard that the Xenon would use HD-DVD as its a MS created standard.

Well, it'll probably be HD-DVD since as said above, that's the MS standard.  Blu-Ray will be an open standard, so it'll get popular quicker, unless Holographic Discs suddenly hits the scene.

I don't think it's going to matter what they use.  They currently only use about 25% of the current media for today's games on average anyway.  They could offer media that holds 100000000s of TBs, and it wouldn't get me excited if the games are still only 2 GB each, on average.  It's going to be interesting to see how large the first XBox 2 games are.
