I believe the HD DVD drive needs software and an update to run on the 360 so id guess no.

True, it should be possible to get it running through Linux.

Otherwise, you'd need a driver just to detect the hardware in the standard OS.  Secondly, you'd need built-in connectivity through the OS to use it.

I tried it just for shits and giggles and it doesn't work.

It may be posible to have it be recognized under linux if someone rights a driver for it, but linux on PS3 is not very powerful, I don't think you can play hd media with it so it might not even be able to play hd material unless soemone opens up the rsx.

(Samsung?) only released Windows drivers so far. So unless you're a wiz at reverse engineering drivers...

HD video is currently playing under linux, with a little more SPE optimization it should be perfect and fullscreen.
But getting the HD-DVD software player will probably take the longest time, I can see drivers coming out pretty quickly.  But that wouldnt' enable you to decode the video on the disc.

Since I recently picked up a ps3 I have been thinking about this.

It's true Sony isn't going to do anything to promote HD DVD even if it would deter from the 360. The reason is that if HD DVD drive sales increase HD will get a foothold on BD. This does not mean it will never happen, but just not untill BD is firmly in homes and not going away.

That leaves a few options.

Using linux: This will allow you to use the drive on your ps3 directly, con is that you have to reboot to goto any other part of the ps3

Hacked Firmware: the obvious drawback is voiding your warranty and damaging the unit. Not to mention the time and effort to hack the firmware in the first place.

Streamed: The draw back here is you only get 720P and you need a relatively fast machine to transcode the 1080p HD format to 720P mp4. Since HD is an mp4 variant the biggest overhead in in going from 1080p to 720p. Most modern machines should be able to handle this in real time. Tversity currently has no support for this so we would need to write some custom software. Unless someone knows of something that cna already do this.

Streaming is the best option if you do not want to keep switching OSes, otherwise since Linux is working that would be your better choice.
