Can linux be accessed easily from the main menu?
Linux has access the blueray/dvd/cd drive, right?
(and hard drive)

Would it be safe to say that the PS3 will soon have an amazing homebrewed media center that plays all types of files (divx, mpg, flash, etcÂ…) ??

It will probably have emulators built right in.  I mean, why not?

With this in mind, the PS3 seems a whole lot cooler.

Linux doesn't have access to the GPU so I doubt you can do much in regards to emulation (except for SNES and NES emulators)...

As for media center capabilities, you can always use VLC.

snes, nes, genesis, sega, -- those would be great..
What about Mame?  would access to the GPU be necessary? (MAME would be awesome)

When you say "you can always use vlc", is it really that easy?
I mean, is there a linux build of vlc that takes input from the PS3 controllers?

Can you access vlc right from the PS3 menu?  (Can it be done?)
that would be the sh@#.
I imagine somebody will make a new version based on vlc (is it open-source?) especially for the PS3. (I hope)
I guess i'd love something as good as XBMC on the PS3, get what i'm saying?

what about blueray?  can linux on the PS3 read blueray discs?  I don't care about store-bought discs; i mean 30 divx movies on a 25gig disc.

Do you think it will happen?

Well some of what you are hoping for is already possible. As for being a great media center though it will take some time because of what h3xagram mentioned about the gpu. You can already use VLC, emulate snes and mame. None of these are working flawlessly yet though (at least for me) and are by no means simple (just my opinion). If you want to start figuring some stuff out get yourself a usb keyboard and mouse and start messing around with Yellow Dog Linux or Gentoo. If your a noob with  linux like me use Yellow Dog Linux the install is much more simple. If you have any questions pm me and I'll do my best to help you out but like I said I'm still a noob myself and have by no meens mastered any of this.  biggrin.gif  Heres some screenshots of what linux looks like running on my ps3 for reference to some of the possibilities...

Awesome, thanks.
so far so good.
No, I don't have a PS3.  Not yet anyway.  Not anytime soon either. $$
But my cousin on the other hand, will be buying one.
He'll listen to me about when... he thinks the price is going to drop at some point.  He'll listen to me, except when i tell him to buy a 360!  (loves those controllers or something)
when somebody has made a real nice "PS3 Media Center" i'll tell him its time.  until then i just see the 360 as more useful...

thanks for the help offer though.
