Sony's worst kept secret is now fully revealed, is it the answer to Live and Connect 24?

Looks really ambitious....the questions is - can a company with Sony's track record for problems really pull it off?

I wonder how much these "extra" downloads will cost..... dry.gif

Sony's track record in the MMORPG market is pretty good.  This PS Home is somewhat similar as far as the environment goes.  Who knows what the extras will cost, but the base is supposedly free.  I think the extras would be somewhat similar to buying gamer pictures and themes on Live.

"Over time Home will grow into a virtual network of spaces."

I am very excited for this but i cannot help but look back at all the big promises and letdowns sony has given us. Does over time mean a few months, a year, the life of the PS3?  I don't doubt that sony can give us something amazing, but will they or will this be another letdown?

I dont think sony has an option but to force this out. If this became a let down then sony is pretty muched fucked. the only thing that would have them is the free online capabilities, but i would expect to see shit load of advertising to pay for the servers, that or the actualy downloadable goodies will be priced significatly high.
but who knows it seems pretty cool the thought i just want to see how long and far it would take sony to actually implent this in a bug free enviroment...

That looks pretty cool, but on a negative note the servers will not be cheap to maintain or get running. We are talking major bandwidth for all those virtual people and they are going to need to make money from somewhere to keep it all running.

I think they will set it up so is free to watch other people but if you want your own virtual person it will cost you.

It would be cool to scan your face and run around in that environment. I look forward to it if it is done right and I hope it is not that expensive.

yeah thats what i figure to setup and maintain servers to hold a high enviroment to lets say about 3 million users will cost a pretty penny, not mention to maintain the servers they have for online gaming. i think like additional content and themes or clothing for your vitrual person is what is going to pay for the servers. But its a good brainstorm and thought i guess sony is trying to put connect24 and xbox live and a blender and call it home (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

Hello Fellow Gamers. The PS3 "Home" concept is a pretty good idea. But I'm going to play a very bad devil's
advocate here. From what I've seen & read, The Home network let's you create a virtual living space or house. Now in that house you can have any photo that you want as pictures throughout the entire area. Now who is to stop anyone from putting up all kinds of porn in that virtual space? Also I've notice that you can also purchase a virtual TV & have any movie that you want also playing in the background. Again who is to stop anyone from displaying very sexually graphic movies?

Kids will have free access to this type of stuff more so now, since Sony has given these perverted people plenty of graphical publishing power. I know some of you have seen the NBC DateLine "To Catch a Predator". Where these perverted people chat (text mind you) to underage kids. They email their genitalia, say (as in type) perverted, sick & demented things to these kids in hopes to have sex with them. Now thanks to SONY, they don't have to email or text anything. They can just layout their room like pornsville, invite a minor, & voice chat with the minor & show them via the pictures & movies just what they would like to do to them. That's way harsher than words will ever be. I'm talking on a global level people!

I hope SONY has really thought this thing through. Somebody will have to police this 24/7 all over the world. If not then I fear the worst is yet to come of this. It's bad enough I hear crap from people on XBL, but this takes it up another level. USA is nortorious for lawsuits & I can see a ton of them coming their way. Imagine if you will, your child in a room that's full of sexally explicit , pictures, videos, & music; all while they chat with a person that would like to do those things to them or not (Duh). A lot of parents don't monitor their kids when they're playing games. They might see them flying or something not related to what I've just said, but then all they (the child) have to do is end the game & go right back into those dangerouse rooms & the parents will think " They're just kids playing a game". When in Reality the "Perverted Predator" has they're undivided attention.

So in closing think about it. I really hope SONY does.

It looks really amazing, but the cost to users may drive it out before it helps them online.  Also that doesn't help the way they do online gaming, still every game has its own friends list once in the game.  They are lacking in other multimedia functions already, so both need to be addressed if they plan on coming back to the #1 spot.

The idea is great though, you can eventually get your own pad and set it up the way you want.  If they do it right and not charge too much, if anything, then it could make the PS3 a more liked system.  It must be hard to have worked so hard on the PS3 to see the Glorified GC and system replacing out sell.  This new idea might help get more sells, but they have to have it come out pretty quick and work well.  If done wrong it could hurt them even more.  M$ reached their Live goal months before schedule, 6m subscribers.

LOL @ Porn City

I definitely think it looks interesting. A complete rip of Phantasy Star Universe, Sims, 360 achievements & game invites. It's good that it's a free service, definitely the cost is going to appear somewhere. I'm sure building a strong online base to sell their movies and tv progs to is one of the main goals to turn a profit. One thing they need to remember is downloadable content needs to be easily accessible within seconds not minutes. If I had to spend 5 to 10 minutes everyday checking for new items only to find nothing new that would get real annoying. Will MS try and counter this? Probably. Nintendo probably won't care. Wii's will still be flying out of stores all year with a huge spike at Christmas.

I'd say it's more a rip of Sims or Second Life, Achievements, and the Wii Miis.  I don't think you can fairly include Phantasy Star Online/Universe because Sony has been in the MMORPG longer with games like EverQuest.   I think it looks great though.  I'm especially intrigued by the idea of being able to collect objects in games to take back to your home.

I think they will try to fund it through advertising and micro-transactions.  For example, I think you'll be able to buy sets of furniture or something for your home.   Then they will likely have videos for sell/rental like the the video marketplace.  One description I read said it would be set up like a movie theater in the virtual world.   The advertising will likely be in the form of billboards, posters, and virtual spaces created by other companies.  Again, one description I read said there would likely be a mall type area where a company like EA could set up a store that would contain advertising and other various promos for upcoming games.

Overall it sounds like it could be a very cool thing if they pull it off correctly.  I guess the porn thing Jagosix mentioned could be a minor concern, but I wouldn't say it goes beyond that.  Hell, you can already do an image search in Google for just about anything you want... and I've already seen more nudity than I cared to see via the 360 web cam when playing Uno.   That's just the nature of the internet and I think the responsibility falls on the parent's shoulders to control access to stuff like that.  I think Sony would be wise to set up some sort of complaint/report system like Live has, but I doubt we'll see many lawsuits come as a result of PS Home.  But I'm sure there will be a few that try.  People will sue over anything these days.

I don't know how many of you guys actually own PS3s and how many come here just to bash the system... but for those that do have one, I look forward to visiting your 'homes' after this launches  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

i am not going to lie i dont own the system. I am still waiting for better games to come out exclusively for the system. I think the home concept is pretty cool. i just would like to see how sony is going to approach this idea of there's. Monthly payment access is going to have to come to play to this "home" community in order to maintain the stabilty and connectivity of the servers. I am looking forward to see what more features they will mention as well has microsoft's and nintendo's remarks towards the idea and there counters. In my opinon right now Microsoft couldnt be in a better position as for gaming community goes. With the marketplace and video marketplace doing very well as well as XBLA. Its going to take more than this home concept to have sony catch up, but well see this year is definatly going to show who is the true console warrior...
