1.9 Amd Athlon Xp Vs 2.8 Intel Pentium 4

it depends on what you do.

if you game a lot, you probably wouldnt.

the athlon does fewer cycles at higher speeds, which is good for gaming.  the intels do exactly the opposite, excellent for business.

in gaming upgrading the the intel would make no difference, unless you have games that are very AI intensive.  more processor power for the AI would mean more bandwidth freed up for graphics.

so in the end, the intel's higher speed may make a difference, on some games.

the real difference will come with new RAM and a new GPU

you will need a new mobo, heatsink, thermal paste however.

Is the Athlon chip you are talking about a 1900+ or a 1.9ghz chip?  My 3200+ is running stock at 2.2ghz, but it competes with 3.2ghz P4s.  If your chip is a 1900+ then a 2.8ghz chip would definitely give you a big speed boost.  If you have a 1.9ghz athlon, then it is probably only like a 2200+ at the fastest, so even then upgrading to a 2.8ghz P4 would give you a healthy speed boost.

no, it sounds like a 1.9 ghz, which is between a 2800 and a 3000, so it would either be just as good, or slightly better

and yes, AMD is better for gaming

large difference? not really. you'd be buying a new cpu and mobo anyhow.  just wait some more, and then upgrade/buy new pc.  not worth it yet; your amd 1.9 should be fine for a while longer.  ive got an amd 1.4 and ad p4 2.6.  not that different at all. things load a bit faster, startup is little bit faster, but nothing significant.

or just dish out 300 bucks and get a Asus K8V SE and a Athlon 64 2800-3200+ (which ever one fancies you)

Wait for PCI-Express, DDR2 and all the fancy new technologies to be incorperated into AMD design (currently known as BSX [Intel currently has them]).

A PCI-Express gfx card would be VERY fast (I believe around 16x, but just runs hella faster than AGP?). Wait for that, and wait for the prices of DDR2 to fall.
