1.2ghz Duron And Via Kt-133 Chipset Mb?
« on: April 01, 2004, 01:27:00 AM »

I've got a Tyan KT7 2390 motherboard here and I plan to use a Duron 1.2ghz CPU (200mhz FSB), but I can't fnd anybody who's pushed the board that much with a Duron.

Anybody here have any experience with it? Worst case, I guess, I have to buy another M/B... I'd just like to upgrade my son's P3 Celly 800mhz system to something a bit faster.

biggrin.gif well the board can handle it, but i wouldnt be to sure about the duron, if i were you i would go to toms hardware and have a look at the articles there but i wouldnt have thought that it would have been able to handle a double in the front side bus, without some serious cooling and playing around with the voltages and i certainly wouldn't belive it would remain stable, try 133 or 166 instead.

sorry if thats eerything u already knew

good luck (and if it all goes wrong i want pics  biggrin.gif )

I ran a 1ghz duron in my abit kt133 mobo for about a year without issue, but as always, your mileage may vary.

That chipset can handle 200mhz fsb I've seen these boards handle up to 1.4 gig cpu's , so it should be a gogo.

I assume you still have the manual handy for reference to the jumper settings, bare in mind if you plan to set the fsb + mult in the bios instead of setting jumpers you may need a firmware upgrade.

I get where your coming from but as far as i remember the fsb rating is effectively double what you run the chip on ie 200fsb runs on 100mhz.

or have i got my wires crossed?

yeah u are right it depends if we are talking about the actual freq. or the ddr freq, which is double, im sorry i thought u were talking about setting the fsb from 100mhz to 200mhz? will u be overclocking this chip?

Thanks for the replies... no overclocking going on.

I figured it should work, but I've been in the intel camp for quite a few years and missed the Athlon buzz.

Just need a decent system so my son can play UT2k4 with some good graphics. My boss gave me the motherboard, a 256MB DIMM and a GeForce3, so it should go together nicely.

Well, just a note: Yes, the Duron 1.2ghz works great on this motherboard. It recognized it as a 1200mhz Duron right off the bat.

With a little luck, my son will be playing UT2k4 on this machine by the weekend.
