Unless Sony and IBM and Toshiba have been keeping the biggest secret ever this simply can't be true. Even at the bottom of the Article they metion that the processor which the 3 companies are currently developing isn't anywhere near production so how can this be true.

its BS.  i just talked to quite a few PS2 guys and said its not true.  Still 2 yrs till PS3.

don't worry, the PS2 will have a lifespan until at least 2005.  and even then, all your PS2 games will still be compatible, and you'll have a fine dvd player to lend your family members.

Is the PS3 supposed to be reverse compatible with the PS2 (Like PS1 on the PS2)?

Tell this to Nintendo. In generall, most people don't make the backwards compatable. (Think Nintendo, Sega, etc.) Yes it may seem stupid, but don't count you chickens before they hatch. There is many good reasons for them not being backwards compatable.

And as Ive recently learned the PS2 is not close to being a fine dvd player.It sucks and if you think its good then you  probably dont own another dvd player or have never seen a movie on anything other than the PS2.
PS2 good for games but eats dvd's with doggy doo on the side
and XBOX is pretty much the same

If anything we might be seeing PS2.1  :D

PS3 is not happening anytime soon... And if it did, there would be no games available, and they would be putting it into the market way too soon, since their PS2 is still the industry leader, and game production has ramped up.

true about PS2 sucking for DVD, has anyone heard the sound if you dont use an external coder? ... exactly... to quiet :blink:

PS 3 will be backward compatible for sure. At developers conferences and interviews they said that was one of the features that gave them an edge (at E3 last year).

Current techonlogy will have PS3 not that much better than my xbox.

Let's see:
If it goes to Japan mid year, then it will have around ATI9700 graphics, which is around 2x of the xbox.
around 1.2 - 1.3 GHz processor (again it's the bus not the MHz stupid) (Probably a 512 bit system)
512 MB of DDR Ram

This doesn't sound like a killer system to me... I mean maybe slightly better than my GeForce 4 ti4400. Certainly enough to run Doom 3.

Probably internal lan card included (with a modem maybe? For all the non-bbs?)
Maybe a 10 GB HD?

See this will be around $500 to produce and if sold at $350, they lose 150 per unit. Why do this when they have a good lead and haven't made enough money for PS2 yet? Sony is always cautious. It maybe Nintendo who's trying to put out a new system first not sony, since right now it's trying to play catch up. Nintendo as a 3rd party software provider anybody?
