"all Controllers Removed" Error

Oh wise ones,
                        My son's modded xbox has had NO issues for many months. It was chipped with an xecuter3ce
and in the last couple of days it has been pausing and reporting "all controllers removed" please check blah blah. and then will continue after a few seconds. He has switched controllers- no luck, and it happens on more than one game. I suspect a controller chip. If so, is it replacable? If not, what could be the problem? I searched the forum and google and could not find this same error.
