Actually, some scientists currently think that petroleum may be abiotic.  You can create petroleum from certain minerals if its under high pressure and is heated.  The theory is that this is how oil is created.  The fact that we find organic molecules in the oil is contributed to organisms similiar to those found in cold vents in the gulf of mexico.  IF this is true, it would imply that oil probably exists on other planets, and that if we dig deeper we should find a lot more oil.
