No one saw the United States as a power of any sort. We were, in their eyes, a bunch outcasts with bad breading (sometimes I think the French still see us that way). And they had no reason too. We had never been the deciding factor in any major conflict until WWII. The only person who may have saw the US as a threat (and just a threat, not a major power) was Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, but he never really saw Japan as signifacant power either.

Do you mean that all(or a vast majority) chinese people would want to be a solider to fight for their beloved China, or do you mean that the chinese government will draft them w/o letting the people have anything to say about it? And having a big army(which the chinese DEFINITELY will have) doesn't necessarily mean they have a good army. The Iraqi army was much bigger than the coalitions army, and they didn't stand a chance. Today it's all about the equipment and vehicles. Which I'm sure the chinese will develop to the world's best.

We as canadians do have a great education system, and contrary to outside belief, we do have a great military. Its by no means as big as the Americans, but its quality is superior. Our soldiers are well trained, and likely the best trained in the world. How many times do you hear of a Canadian soldier(s) killing allied troops? I've heard of a couple of american soldiers...
