An official statement from Microsoft has revealed that the motion picture based on Bungie's Halo franchise will be helmed by Neill Blomkamp, a short film and commercial director making his feature film debut with the movie.

Mary Parent, Scott Stuber and Peter Schlessel will produce Halo. The film is currently targeted for a Summer 2008 worldwide release. Halo will be shot in Wellington, New Zealand, and will make use of the full range of executive producer Peter Jackson's state-of-the-art production and post-production facilities there, including Weta, Stone Street Studios, and Park Road Post.

The release from Microsoft also mentions latest figures for the video game franchise: "Halo and its 2004 follow-up Halo 2 have sold a combined 14.5 million copies worldwide and grossed more than $650 million (U.S.). On November 2004, Halo 2 shattered records with $125 million in first-day sales."

I'm a bit worried that M$ would take such a big chance with an unknown director....
I mean I've seen his short film "Alive in Joburg" and it's pretty cool.
But commercials and short films are nothing compared to a big blockbuster film....
The impression I get here is that M$ pushed this a little.
I mean instead of waiting on Guillermo del Toro, they decided to wait no longer and start production in time for a 2008 silver screen release....

Dunno, but I don't like this.
I mean who knows, right now this guy is the luckiest small time aspiring director on Earth.
Hopefully his hunger will produce a better than expected picture....

After seeing the news and thinking "wow inexperienced big screen director - bit risky" the next thought I had was (exactly):

Exec producer is Peter Jackson so there's still some hope left.

Maybe some of you have seen this little clip, a previous work of Neill Blomkamp. And another here that depicts a future "where extraterrestrials have become refugees."

Here's a brand new interview with Neill Blomkamp regarding the Halo movie.
But first a quote from the interview:

QUOTE
Quint: What's the overall tone you want to strike with the movie? Escapist, big budget action fun? Gritty, realistic future war? Neither? Both?

Neill Blomkamp: Well, I don’t want to give away exactly how I want to be, but, big budget action can certainly look very similar to 100 other films which are big budget action, so my goal is to make something that is honestly unique and a radical departure from stuff we are used to.

I’ve been given the resources and the source material to make something awesome, so I have to really invest myself 100% in a film that I love every frame of, and for me to love every frame means it has to have something that sets it apart.

Fans of the game should love this film, people who don’t know the game should be transported to a place that blows them away for two hours.

Here's the link to the entire interview:

I feel a little better about the movie after reading this, perhaps so will you....
