My Pulsar Gti-r
« on: March 13, 2010, 10:53:00 AM »

I had been Hankering after one of these little rockets for years and just before last christmas I finally picked one up.

Shes a 92 Pulsar GTI-R for those who don't know (not very popular Stateside, though there is a fair community in Canada). They are 2.0T AWD and are little rockets. Around 220bhp and 1200kgs as standard.

Spec is nothing special, mostly standard aside from magnex exhaust, chassis dynamics springs and helix organic clutch.

Bodywork has seen better days with a fair share of dings and rusty bits but as it's parked on the street it's better that way.

Future plans are to strip it to a shell and paint it ibis white and build it for fast road/track, need to find myself a lockup/unit nearby first however!

On to the pics!

Not very popular stateside because they never made them here... well, not the GTi-R version...

They sold the FWD with the slow as molasses NA 4-banger from the sentra.

IIRC they never sold them in Canada either but a lot of people import them there (It's illegal to import vehicles to the US that haven't been crash tested, Emissions tested, and then "fixed" to comply with both... a process which costs several hundred thousand to do unless the car was originally sold here...) A lot of people in the US have done conversions from the base model pulsar importing parts from Europe or Japan.

Just another car on the long long list of cars that they never brought to the US (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) Despite the fact that we have a higher car-buying population than any other continent on the planet, they still question whether Americans will actually by a AWD or turbocharged vehicle.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)  Thank god Subaru was bold enough to TRY IT in 2002 when they finally gave us a WRX.

Anyway, nice looking car, bet it's a blast to drive.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool.gif)

Hamwbone, it's supposed to have a cover on it but most of them either fall off or or get stolen, and they cost a fortune, around £40 from nissan!  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

TS, Yeah it is a shame, doesnt it also have something to do with the sr20det?  They werent overly popular here either though, with only 70 (IIRC) Sunny GTi-R's made, most of them here now are Imports, like mine, the rear fog light is a dead giveaway!

There can't be more than a handful of good condition UK cars left, alot having been subject to the tin worm or highly modified.

At the moment its pretty "interesting" to drive, It has cheap rubber on the tyres and the standard brakes are garbage..Im convinced the brakes on my sunny were better, and it had drums at the rear.

Nissan Never Sold any car with an SR20DET in North America, I believe it had to do with them assuming Americans didn't like turbos or some such nonsense.

as a result it's impossible to legally to import an SR20 since the motors don't conform to US emissions standards... that doesn't stop people from actually importing and using them though (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

I can buy an SR20DET pulled out of a Silvia or 180SX with all the fixins within driving distance from my house for about $2000 (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

I do know a few people who have done GTi-R conversions too.

What sort of performance are we talking..roughly, compared to say the S3 I have which is a quattro runnning a revo remap and circa 265BHP. I would imagine the GTi is much lighter so will be very quick

Quoted 0-60 is around 5.5 but i can't confirm as I never launch cars, your s3 will be a little heavier with all that safety nonsense they put in cars now, around 250kg?

I didnt realise your s3 was remapped, I reckon it would be close between them!

Have you seen this s3? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Id2O0vC7Lk

AWD conversions are a ton of work... but it's possible.

One of the guys in my club is building an AWD S14 swapping the entire drive-train out of an R33 Skyline. When he finishes he will be one of 3 people in the USA with a running AWD swapped S-Chassis  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

Oh of course, not worth it usually if you ask me though! It's just because you said gti-r conversions? I take it you just meant dumping the engine in? too much wheelspin in a FWD car for my liking!

Bout time you go that V8 conversion tied up though.....

no there are people who have done the full AWD conversion in addition to the motor, it's a lot easier than converting an S14 to AWD since the chassis is already designed to accept it.

Been a while since i've been in this thread, my car went into my unit a couple of months ago and i have been doing a few hours here and there removing bits but today the engine came out, worth snapping a few pics i thought!

Getting ready for the lift, everything but det sensor disconnected.

(IMG:http://www.apcd53.dsl.pipex.com/pulsar/stripdown/stripdown1.jpg)

Getting there now...

(IMG:http://www.apcd53.dsl.pipex.com/pulsar/stripdown/stripdown2.jpg)

Freedom!

(IMG:http://www.apcd53.dsl.pipex.com/pulsar/stripdown/stripdown3.jpg)

Filthy engine, gearbox and transfer box.

(IMG:http://www.apcd53.dsl.pipex.com/pulsar/stripdown/stripdown4.jpg)

Even filthier engine bay!

(IMG:http://www.apcd53.dsl.pipex.com/pulsar/stripdown/stripdown5.jpg)

Next up, strip the rear end and interior then get it rolled onto it's side  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

do you also change your oil filter by hoisting the car out of the way?

Haha, it is the best way to remove the lump as it won't come out the top unless the gearbox and transferbox is removed.

It's a big lump in a fairly small space.

its nice to see the motor getting dropped instead of pulled, around where i live everyone pulls the V's but that car is a hell of alot different

keep up the good work! hope your hands are getting dirty too!!
