Do I Need A Computer To Connect

Do I need a computer to use online gaming.  (of course not for xbox live, but what about the rest?)

I wonder why not?
Since the xbox is kinda like a pc, I wonder if an xbox will ever be able to connect directly to anything other than xbox live.

Is the network connection hardware inside the xbox very different then that of a pc?
