If you can't find a solid answer, you probably didn't search very hard.

It's possible, but you'll need to perform either the JTAG/SMC hack, the Reset Glitch Hack, or the R-JTAG, depending on the dashboard and motherboard versions.

That's an option, but he asked for it "like the [X]box original", so that's how I answered the question. ODDEs don't provide functionality like a full system hack, though you're right that they will allow playing games from an external hard drive.
