No, if the drive didn't match the motherboard it would at the very least eject. If you've replaced cables it sounds like the actual ports on the board are damaged. My logic says if the drive works in your computer and you've tried different cables for the DVD drive in the xbox then it's the motherboard.

I suppose I would get the play DVD message if the drive didnt match, all the pins appear intact on the mobo ports. I guess I need to pull the board and inspect it closer.
