Xbox 360 Elite | 3 Rrod | Searching For 12v
« on: January 14, 2009, 09:27:00 PM »

Alright so ive customized my 360 elite a bit and today i decided to check for some 12v connections in the 360 for the 4" cathodes i plan on putting in it. I used a digital MultiMeter to try and find the 12v connections while the 360 was turned on. Now when i turned off my 360 and turned it back on i get the 3 Red Rings of Death. The wierd thing is though that the 360 wont turn on when i try to start it, i only get the 3 red rings blinking and green center led. When i attempt to So i started troubleshooting it. Im 99.9% sure its not an overheating problem seeing that the 360 wont even pwoer on.
1.removed and reconnected HDD and Dvd Drive- didnt work
2.removed and reconnected cables, changed av cables-didnt work
3.checked for blown capacitors-none
4.checked for loosing connections-none
5.checked for blown soldering-maybe 1
6.Checked for burned areas on motherboard-none
It almost seems that the soldering joint isnt supposed to be connected to anything, but i connected it at the joints but still got the 3 red rings.
When i was using the DMM on the 360 i didnt hear any "pop" or noise indicating something blew.
Heres the connection i think broke up but i soldered together.(IMG:http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v431/oinkpyig/CIMG3313.jpg)

What should I do now? Even when the LEDs are flashing it remains in standby mode at 5 volts

Check for the secondary error code, that will probly help people to help you diagnose the problem, you can find the sticky at the top of this forum on how to find it out.

Try unplugging your PSU for half a minute and plug it back in and try it. If that doesnt work your only other chance is buying another PSU. And remember kids, NEVER USE A MULTIMETER ON A 360 THAT IS TURNED ON!

Use the 12v from under the PSU plug, it's the same on all versions of the 360.

The PSU fuse is fine or ya wouldn't be getting any power at all to the 360, put that thing back together before ya do damage it or yourself.

Putting that jumper wire on the motherboard was pointless, that connection is made thru the tab of the Regulator. It's not causing any issues, but it didn't do anything either.

Ohm out the 12v and 5v lines to Ground, see if either is shorted, and do NOT have the PSU plugged in when doing those checks.

If you did the X-clamp replacement make sure nothing is too tight causing the heatsink to hit a component on the board and cause a short.

Ive ohmed a couple connections, but wat good would that do? How could i find a short by doing this? Do you think i should attempt the x-clamp?

Well if you get back a reading that isn't normal (a short is 0~1ohms or so) and then you'll at the very least have some place to start looking for the issue instead of blindly wandering around the board looking for the problem and asking if ya should try fixes that have nothing to do with said problem.
