I think you just join two prongs from what I can recall. But I honestly cant remember lol !.

Just because you haven't run across a bad one yet doesn't mean they don't exist.

Shorting all 4 of the contacts together for the Tact switch would be the same as holding the button down, so if that did nothing there then a new switch isn't going to help it any.

Without being able to measure that component to tell exactly, it could be any number of Tact switches.

You'll have to compare the DataSheet for it to the measurements of the old one there to know for sure though.

Both Mouser and DigiKey are good places for components like that, but again, if shorting the pads together did nothing, then neither will a new switch.
