It depends on a couple of things: what dashboard version is the console on and what DVD-ROM model does it have?

If you want to use backups and are on quite an old dashboard (before 13599), the 360 will reflash the drive to stock firmware while updating, requiring a new flash. If you just want to use originals, you should be fine, presuming your console doesn't have a Samsung and the DVD-ROM is not spoofed. If you have a spoofed drive or Samsung with custom firmware, you'll need to get the original drive model or flash the drive to stock before update, respectively.
