I totally understand the SSD speed thing, the main reason is my existing IDE HDs are already ~10 years old and I don't want to be replacing it again. So it's more about age.

you may be able to flash without soldering. you can use a liquid silver pen or conductive paint to make the connection, just masking tape off the areas around the two points.
