I would do a very close double check on the version of your xbox as I know some of the special edition cases were 1.6...

Thanks! If I did a softmod instead, could I still use my HD with all the dashboards and such I have on it? Or would I have to re-format it?

if you did the soft mod and *only* the soft mod you would/could eventually use it all, but it would be a bit of work. I'd grab a 1.0-1.1 (if you can be choosy) or a 1.2-1.5 and soft mod it, TSOP flash it with the solder points, and then swap the hard drives. I'd also look into your current hard drive and figure out what the boot order is so that you can set that up correctly..  Most important of all is ensuring that the drive is in an UNLOCKED state before swapping.
