Sever Hard Drive Upgrade Problems
« on: April 22, 2013, 12:23:00 PM »

I been trying for years to upgrade a hard drive on a softmodded xbox and failed. I have 5 paperweights from trying to upgrade. The trouble im having with the hotswap is you have tha short period of time to unhook the Data cable from the xbox to PC. Everytime it's time to hotswap i go into panic mode and end up bending pins on the hard drive. I loe to softmod, it's easy and simple. I upgraded a hard drive on a chipped xbox and it was easy as 1-2-3. Only thing was i think my chipped xbox modchip defunct and no longer worked. Anyone know what i should do? I have not tried to do it in 3 years for the fact of having another paperweight bending and breaking pins hotswapping.

If the Xbox is softmodded then you don't need to hotswap. Either:

A. Make a copy of the eeprom contents (eeprom.bin), then use that with xboxhdm and Kingroach NDURE 3.1 to build and lock the new disk
B. As above, but use Autobuilder with the eeprom
C. Use Chimp 2618 to upgrade the disk using the Xbox
D. Use HeXEn (Google Heimdall's Xbox Engineering Disc) to upgrade the disk using the Xbox

A and B require a PC with an IDE socket on the motherboard, C and D require an external power source for the second disk (e.g. your PC or an external drive enclosure).

In passing, you're also misunderstanding hotswapping. You have to UNPLUG the drive at precisely the right point, but having done that you can take your time plugging the drive into your PC, so there's no need to panic and bend pins.
