Fried Xenium....
« on: March 27, 2004, 07:53:00 PM »

I just received my Xenium yesterday (Friday). I desoldered my Chameleon, and installed the Xenium as specified for a v1.0 Xbox. After checking to make sure that there were no solder bridges or splashes on the MB, I re-assembled my Xbox and powered it on. At first, all I got was error 13, then I smelled burning components! I quickly disconnected the power and started on dismatling my Xbox yet again. After desoldering the Xenium, I noticed burn marks on the MB beneath the chip. I looked on the underside of the Xenium, and realized that it had burned. Thinking that my Xbox was most likely fried, I re-soldered my Chameleon and went through the whole re-assembly and test process. Odly enough, my Xbox was fine! Evox loaded and has since been running all of my software without a hitch.

Based on the description of what a v1.0 Xbox is, I'm quite sure I've followed the instructions correctly. Besides, I'm no novice when it comes to soldering or electronics. I have no idea of what could have gone wrong. At least the only thing I lost was my Xenium, which I will replace with a new one. Has this happened to anyone else?

Same thing happened to me on one install... but then after that I just de-soldered and re-soldered again and it worked just fine... all i could figure is that I bridged it somewhere...  oh well, the guy I installed for doesn't have to know does he?

That's exactly what it looked like! MY Xenium was authentic. I made sure of that before installing it. Could it be that I may have needed to add the grounding wire? Being that my Xbox is v1.0, I shouldn't have had to, but I'm thinking that I should have anyway. I would love to post a pic, but my digital camera is out on loan. I'll post one when I get it back.

the picture is not all that great, but if you look, you'll see a burn going through the XEN in Xenuim. Also, the trace above has burned pretty bad from the solder pad above, to a point above the N in Xenium. BTW, thanx for the replies!

Did both the area marked in RED and GREEN both burn out?

The Area I  marked in RED almost looks like it was party to a repair attempt.

The Green line.. looks more or less like the example I showed.

sorry to take so long in responding, but I was out of town for a while on business. To answer your question, yes, both traces were burnt. The "repair attempt", was actually me wiping away the burnt plastic with alcohol. I'll post where I purchased my chip from when I get back home.

how's that? I've done exactly what the instructions specified. None of this is new to me. I've been working with electronics for over 10yrs now. Component level troubleshooting was once my profession before switching to computers and cars. I'm no rookie.

My Xenium has this same burn pattern on it. It happened when I flipped the switch on the side to recovery mode. When it started smoking, I quickly shut the box off. The chip still works fine, but I'm unable to use the recovery mode via. the switch.

Is this a common problem? FYI, my chip is not a clone.
