pSlax v2.1 - Linux Bootdisc to get HLG drive in modeB
« Reply #15 on: December 22, 2006, 08:22:00 PM »

I'll try this method out, since v2 only worked once for me as well.  Maybe I'm just being stupid, but I can't get either SATA card I have on my motherboard to have my 360 dvd drive be recognized. (I have a  VIA 6421 RAID card and a sil3114 one) When I get the drive in mode b using the cross-wire method, that works, but still can't get the drive recognized  dry.gif  Don't really see what difference this would make for me pertaining to my situation, but I'll try it out; hopefully miracles do happen after all  biggrin.gif

Still doesn't work with my VIA 6421 card or onboard VIA 8237

Below are various photos of the errors I get. Please bear in mind that the drive is NOT bricked and boots originals fine (the drive so far is unhacked)

Any ideas? I've done the usual of trying different ports, trying the 8237 on it's own. There are no boot/raid options for the 8237 or 6421. I've tried booting up the 360 at different times with the same effect.

QUOTE(shiz @ Dec 22 2006, 08:30 PM) *

for me it detected the drive when it was hoooked up to my 6421 ONCE. However i missed a step during the boot up procedure for slax (hitting eject during SPINNING UP DRIVE) and i had to do it over again, however hte second and subsequent attempts it failed to detect the drive again....
I then got frustrated and hooked up the sata cable to my onboard Sata on the mobo (Nf4 chipset) and it worked flawlessly

Both you and sonky dont know what your talking about, at least you didnt do it right. Flashed a Hitachi tonight with a VIA 6421.

I saw you have a Promise card in there, take it out. Disable any SATA that doesn't need to be enabled. And if you need to boot of any SATA re-enable it once you press ctrl-alt-del after the drive is in mode b. Also I have to boot XP off my Promise FastTrak 100 and Slax wouldn't boot with it in there. I thought you might be using that Promise card to boot XP as well. So what I did since obviously I needed XP, I just unplugged the card when the PC was off but left it almost inside the PCI slot so it was easy to push in and when Slax booted properly and the drive was in mode b (takes two presses of the eject button to eject) I inserted the card while my PC was running and rebooted. Drive was still in mode b, booted from raid card, then flashed drive first time with 100% success. Try those methods, it basically has to work for you or your not telling us everything. This is all I could gather from your pics and what you typed. VIA 6421 works 100% I used it tonight to do a Hitachi. LMK if she works out.

Hi,

the problem you have here (failed on command 0xA1 (=IDENTIFY_ATAPI_DEVICE) means that the controller is not capable to send any command to the drive(which means it's locked up); acpi linux tends to put all devices to the same irq; have you tried to manually assign different irqs to both of the sata controllers (in bios)? You can also try to remove the pci controller and stick with the internal one (or disable the internal one and use the pci card); windows normally tends to give these controllers a different irq which means that you will encounter less problems there..

I don't have any Promise controllers as far as I'm aware? Only the onboard VIA 8237 and PCI VIA 6421.

I have tried removing the PCI card and only using the onboard, and vice versa with disabling the onboard - still no luck.

XP is on an IDE drive so I don't need to boot of any of the SATA interfaces.

Have you tried to put the controllers on different irqs or disable one of them?

As I said above, I have tried disabling and using each controller on their own. I will try different IRQ's and see if that helps.

Still no difference, just getting the port is slow to respond and status 0x80 errors.

I'm getting the same errors/problem with my Intel HCL7 sata chip. Raid is disabeled, assigned irq's manually but no mode-b after booting slax. When i type 'lspci' slax identifies the ide bus as the intel one so i'm naturally assuming the included kernel supports it. Just getting a lot of device errors and no mode-b. After re-assembling the xbox it works fine so it's not broken.

I used Slax 2.1 and have 2 sata hdd's and a pata dvdrom player connected to the motherboard.

I've resolved my problem. After disconnecting my normal sata harddisks and use their connectors on the motherboard it suddenly worked. Slax put my hitachi in mode-b and after a reboot to windows i got it to show up there aswell and the flashing went fine.

Bothered with why it didn't work in the first place, the motherboard manual learned me that i had been trying to connect it to the onboard sata raidcontroller instead of a normal sata port.  blink.gif

So i can safely state that the flashing will work fine with an Asus P5B and Intel ICH7 sata chipset.

Also for trial and error future notice, if your xbox light on the front starts flashing red you probably forgot to connect the video cable.  rolleyes.gif

Hi everyone.  I've written down afeiw sata cards that don't work and afeiw that do. Before all this I happened to order this off ebay.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...p;rd=1&rd=1 its a Silicon Image SATALink 3112A chipset which I guess you would think wouldn't work but I did read in these forums that someones worked fine so anymore confirmations on this before I cancel my order.

I also seen this one one ebay also

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...p;rd=1&rd=1 this one seems to be a VIA VT6421A which I beleive work. So which one should I go for.

I've got everything else I need and I just need a sata pci card now.

Thanks for your time.
