Xenon Vs Ps3 Loading Times
« on: March 21, 2005, 04:53:00 PM »

Does anyone know the specs on the Blu-ray drives when it comes to loading times?  And also how it will compare to the 12x DVD drive on Xenon?

lol.

From all we know so far, blu-ray takes much longer to load up (disc-wise).

While a 16x dvd drive (which xbox 2 will most likely be using) runs at 133x (correct me if im wrong, im just ballparking. someone else posted these blu-ray vs dvd specs, im just recalling the info) while a blu-ray runs at around 20-ish.

That doesn't have much to do about loading times, but it's a shot.

Also, the cell chip has a much less clock speed compared to what the Xbox2 will be using (g5), so that will most likely play a part.

Why do you ask about the 'loading times', of all things. And, omgosh, a new thread for it? It's ok, if anyone finds any updates on these fashionable 'loading times', I'm sure they can find where to post it.

Actually, the thread about when the Xbox2 modchip being available was the worst thread ever... at least this has component specs to speculate on.

Actually this thread is good. I remember when Sega decided to go with the CD-ROM format for the DreamCast vs the DVD technology that PS2 was going to use.

Dreamcast always loaded a lot faster than the PS2. That's one of the main reasons the PS2 pissed a lot of people off in the beginning. Yes there were lots of jaggies and yes the first batch of games really sucked but those of us who were used to playing DC were really bothered by the long load times of the PS2.

Of course later on in the PS2's life, with better programing(I guess), the loading times improved on some games but they never were as good as on the DreamCast.

If the X2 uses Standard DVD-9 and that enables it to have the same huge loading advantage over the PS3's blue ray as the DreamCast had over the PS2, then I don't think it will be as bad a move as we all first thought.

Load times matter, who wants to sit there staring at a screen waiting for a game to load? When I die and want to start again, it pisses me off to no end when the game takes too long to load. A great example would be GTA.

Ok... in keeping up with good humor, how exactly does Blu-Ray have a slower loading time than a DVD.  Doesn't Blu-Ray have a transfer rate three times better than DVD?

Blue Ray discs have to spin. How fast the transfer rate depends on how fast the disk spins and the laser reads the data.

Top end DVD players like the one in the X2 may be able to read much faster than entry level Blue Ray disks.

Thanks for the info guys.  I made this thread to see if anyone knew anything about this.  Say the data on Blu-Ray is 3 times the density of a DVD, then a 5x B-R drive would out perform a 12x DVD drive, hence faster loading times for ps3 games.

This is my concern dude.

It doesn't really matter. I mean, the ps2 and xbox drives were almost identical, and the ps2 still had slower loading times. Im not sure the drive would have a hip-and-kaboodle over the overall loading times as much as ram etc.

Do you think the ps3 can top the 512mb ram which MS is considering?

Data transfer rate: Bluray 54.0Mbps, DVD 11.1Mbps

But we don't know what speed PS3 bluray is going to be, 1x, 2x, 4x?

So its hard to know.

No way Sony is doing more than 512 MB of RAM. If MS does 512 MB, then they'll both have the same amount of RAM.

:uhh: How would they have the 'same' if MS does 512?
Is ps3 doing 512 too?
*cough* overheat*  :jester:
