What did it do over 1.1?
- Fixed Black Screen Contrast Problem
- Fixed Various Bugs

How do you jailbreak?
The easiest jailbreak ever, you just go to http://www.jailbreakme.com on firmware 1.1.1 and you'll jailbroken.

PROS
- Easy Jailbreak
- Almost All Applications are compatible
- Better for skinning
- Supports full skinning, keyboard skinning, and almost all themes.
- Stability
- Easy to re-jailbreak
- Very good compatibility

CONS
- Cannot add calendar events without fix
- Not as optimized
- Sound quality slightly worse
- No wiggling icons / No Webclip Creation
- Limited to 400 MHz

1.1.2

What did it do over 1.1.1?
- Patched TIFF exploit
- Added an add calendar event button
- Added a battery meter in iTunes
- Fixed Various Bugs

How do you jailbreak?
1.1.2 is a real jailbreak. First, jailbreak 1.1.1 via the above method. Then, install oktoprep, which installs a back door so you can jailbreak. Go to iTunes and upgrade your iPod to 1.1.2 and use the Touch Free Jailbreak. This is still quite an easy jailbreak.

PROS
- Very little bugs
- Still quite easy to jailbreak
- More Stable
- Add Calendar Events
- Very stable
- A little faster than 1.1.1
- Processor Speed Bumped to 412 MHz.

CONS
- Cannot do Keyboard Skinning
- No wiggling icons / No Web Clip Creation
- Crashes on occasion

1.1.3

What did it do over 1.1.2?
- Added Movie Rental Support
- Mail
- Weather
- Stocks
- Notes
- Maps
- Multiple Home Screens
- Webclips
- Rearrangeable Home Screens
- Fixed Various Bugs

How do you jailbreak?
Use ZiPhone or iLiberty+.

PROS
- Better Battery Life than 1.1.1 or 1.1.2
- Adds many new features
- More Stable
- Faster than Previous Firmware Versions

CONS
- Seems a little buggier than previous firmwares
- Locate Me in Google Maps doesn't always work
- Ugly New Cheesegrater Dock
- Slightly Reorganized File System (1.1.1 and 1.1.2 repos do not work well with it)
- Soft Jailbreaks often crash to the Force Restore (Connect to iTunes) screen
- Some applications unusable, others don't work well
- Needs quite a few fixes to get many common applications to work
- Purchased songs from iTunes might not work
- Springboard runs as different user, causing some older apps to not work.

1.1.4

What did it do over 1.1.3?
- Better Tabbed Browsing
- Better Audio Quality/Louder
- Fixed Various Bugs

How do you jailbreak?
Use ZiPhone or iLiberty+. Same as 1.1.3.

PROS
- Many Nice Bug Fixes
- More Stable
- Most Recent
- Still Faster

CONS
- Doesn't really improve very much. Seems to be a placeholder.
- Some applications do not work very well with it.

1.1.5

What did it do over 1.1.4?
- Bug Fixes.
- As far as we can tell, nothing else.

How do you jailbreak?
Use ZiPhone or iLiberty+.

PROS
- Bug Fixes

CONS
- It is simply a placeholder for people that chose not to upgrade to 2.0, couldn't afford it, or cannot use the iTunes Store to buy products.
- The Jailbreak status is known to be a bit buggy.

2.0

What did it do over 1.1.5?
- Chinese Handwriting Recognition
- More Languages
- Reworked Settings
- Restrictions (Parental Controls)
- Location Services
- Enterprise Features
- Reworked Calculator with new graphics and Scientific mode.
- Reworked Contacts with search and more fields.
- App Store
- New iTunes icon
- MobileMe support
- Mass Mail Delete

How do you jailbreak?
Pwnage Tool, winpwn, QuickPwn.

PROS
- Many, many new features.
- Great scientific calculator.
- Enterprise features with Cisco VPN, MobileMe support, and Microsoft Exchange.
- Ability to purchase applications.
- January Update comes bundled with it.

CONS
- Very buggy. Random reboots and lag are not appreciated.
- All applications from previous firmwares must be ported to 2.0.
- A bit pricy.

2.0.1

What did it do over 2.0?
- Bug Fixes. Far more stable than 2.0.

How do you jailbreak?
Pwnage Tool, winpwn, QuickPwn.

PROS
- Bug Fixes make it a much more valuable version of 2.0.

CONS
- Still rather buggy.
- Applications from previous firmwares (1.1.x) do not work on 2.0.1.

2.0.2

What did it do over 2.0.1?
- Yet more bug fixes and stability fixes.

How do you jailbreak?
Pwnage Tool, Winpwn, QuickPwn.

PROS
- Yet more bug fixes make it an even better 2.0.

CONS
- Still quite buggy. Random reboots and lag are not appreciated.
- All applications from previous firmwares (1.1.x) must be ported to 2.0.

2.1

What did it do over 2.0.2?
Firmware 2.1 added a bunch of new bug fixes and was released alongside the new iPod touch, although it was not on the new device. Genius playlists, epic bug fixes, and better display information were just some of the new features.

How do you Jailbreak?
Pwnage Tool, QuickPwn.

PROS
- Far less buggy
- Shorter Backup time
- Genius
- Added Music display

CONS
- Still a bit buggy.
- Applications from previous firmwares (1.1.x) do not work.

2.2

What did it do over 2.1?
Firmware 2.1 added a bunch of new bug fixes, huge speed improvements, and retooling of a few portions of specific applications.

How do you Jailbreak?
Pwnage Tool, QuickPwn.

PROS
- Far less buggy
- Very stable
- Faster
- New Google Maps Features
- Retooled App Store
- Podcast downloading in iTunes
- Retooled Safari
- Home Screen (Home Button) Shortcut

CONS
- Caused some incompatibility problems with some applications, most notably PwnPlayer and MewSeek.
- No Google Maps Street View (iPhone Only) Note that this can be enabled by StreetViewEnabler in Cydia
- Applications from previous firmwares (1.1.x) do not work.
- I don't know about you, but I got some random reboots.

2.2.1

This update included various bug fixes.

PROS
- Far less buggy
- Shorter Backup times.

CONS

- Still a bit buggy.

Please remember that the newest firmware will have advancements that save battery, fix bugs, and make your iPod run faster. In addition, developers will update their applications for the newer firmwares, making your iPod unable to run some of them.
