Xbox360 Experimental Patches for Linux Kernel 2.6.24.3

New experimental patches have been released on free60.org for one of the latest linux kernel (2.6.24.3). This will allow the people running Linux on their Xbox 360 to upgrade to a newer kernel:

Get the source for the Linux 2.6.24.3 Kernel from kernel.org (http://www.kernel.org/) and unpack it somewhere in your home directory.
cd
wget http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/linux-2.6.24.3.tar.bz2
tar -xvjf linux-2.6.24.3.tar.bz2

2. Download and apply the experimental Xenon patchset.
cd linux-2.6.24.3/
wget http://home.comcast.net/~ssmurf/linux-2.6.24.3-xenon.diff
patch -p1 < linux-2.6.24.3-xenon.diff
done

3. Configure the Kernel.
make ARCH=powerpc CROSS_COMPILE=powerpc64-unknown-linux-gnu- menuconfig

4. Build the Kernel by typing:
make ARCH=powerpc CROSS_COMPILE=powerpc64-unknown-linux-gnu- all

Or if you have ppu-gcc properly set-up: CROSS_COMPILE=ppu-

If everything goes well, you will end up with a file arch/powerpc/boot/zImage.xenon containing the kernel which can be loaded by the XeLL.

Remember, these patches are Experimental!

i don't know if free60 is still in active developement, because their wiki is bein hammered all the time.

what are you talking about ? about 2 months ago we installed a captcha.. and we (someone else and I) spend a good part of a day converting all the spam back to the original info...

If anyone is wondering... Your able to install linux on a usb harddrive with this kernel, usb is waay more stable... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

i havnt actually tested linux on the 360 yet, and i wont untill its more stable and better driver support, but nice work

Nice, but still, is sound and 3d video working? That would be so awesome if yes, it would make me consider buying an Infectus to downgrade my Xbox 360!

Still no sound (use some usb-sound thing).
As for 3d it would require someone to write api's for dri/glx/compositing which would take up LOTS of time.
But since there is allready a very lowlevel 3d gpu library, it should be possible.
When there is an easier hack/exploit and more people will start using free60 then I'm sure it will happen.

Whoa! Everyone keeps copying this article out of context all over the Internet.
I sincerely doubt that the Xbox 360 uses a POWERPC architecture.

this article hasnt been taken out of context at all. its saying they now have a beta xbox 360 patch for the 2.6.24.3 Linux Kernel
