Ubuntu on xbox360
Posted by Iriez | March 25 19:51 EST | News Category: Xbox360

Cpasjuste used the Hypervisor Vulnerability, King Kong shader exploit, XeLL bootloader and linux xenon patches to boot Ubuntu Linux on his Xbox360.
Was just reading this on Engadget ...

The day that we all know will eventually come could be upon us: a hacker called Cpasjuste claims to have managed to get his Xbox 360 to run unsigned code in the form of the Ubuntu OS. An AVI video coupled with a rather flimsy walkthough guide is the evidence, which, to us, looks convincing. Alright, so there is a dodgy cut near the beginning of the video, but that happens to be followed by a "patched" copy of King Kong being booted, and then a string of Linux command line text, and eventually the Ubuntu boot screen. The instructions for doing it yourself require that you own an Xbox 360 with an exploitable kernel, a flashed DVD drive, a serial adapter, a patched copy of King Kong, and a "Xell" loader and a "powerpc toolchain" -- whatever they are -- but if you've got all that and the whole thing isn't an elaborate hoax, then there's nothing else to say but Microsoft's ability to patch is now the limit for homebrew on the Xbox 360. It's about friggin' time.

Also, I would like to note that StonerSmurf from the xboxhacker forums pulled this off yesterday :)

Wow, this is great news. Who knows what security holes will be opened up with a full fledged system running!

Hi Guys

I'm just wondering I updated to the lastest firmware on my xbox360, My mate said I can swap console's with him which has not been on xbox live before.

My question is if I removed my HDD and place it on his will it not flash the firmware on his console?

I also have MS25 Samsung drive with King Kong disc.

Cheers

Josh

no, it does not update you. I did this today with a friend who's box was on xbox live.  I swapped hard drives, then checked my kernel. it was not updated to 4552.

*sigh* when people make videos, why do they mess them up?

At the start all is believable, showing the xbox controller - the guy even shows us that its connected when he clicks start on king kong, the text scrolling down screen is believable, but then a dodgy video cut, and mouse icon moving on screen of Ubuntu, but no further evidence that its the xbox 360 running it! Notice how the camera is all over the place during the 1st believable stage, then suddenly during Ubuntu its fixed on the screen.

For all we know, he plugged in his pc to the tv after the cut... pffft

Before i get flamed, i will say that im not calling a fake as such, but if your going to make a video, at least get it right.

i hear ya, good news for the very few who didnt update, but the rest of the world and also the new xbox 360s comming out etc, with the newest updates, its pointless. Good job tho, yet worthless to most of us, even tho we can still play our backups. But of course we want to run our own apps!

Keep up the good work
SInce there going to be constantly working on this, hopefully someone else will work on something for ALL 360's no matter the version. Thats what we REALLY want, "UNIVERSAL" not just non upgraded systems.  mad.gif

Seems fake, it looked like he just switched the video source on his TV to a PC running Ubuntu, how are we suppose to know that the 360 is running it?

Exactly what i said above, im not saying this is impossible to do, given the fact that we all know this king kong shader exploit exists, but this guy certainly shows me absolutely no evidence that he got Ubuntu running on his 360. - Thus a completely pointless video
