buddy i would reinstall the package again it seems you do not have the extention installed. I would exit media center, uninstall the package, reinstall the package restart your media center then restart your 360. Should be all set.

Thanks for all the feedback guys:

DynaMight, biosehnsucht - you can playback XviD and DivX video using Transcode with the DivX 6.1 and AC3 filter codecs, these are the only ones compatible with Windows Media Encoder currently, so you'd have to uninstall XviD and ffdshow if you've got them currently installed and use the DivX codec.  Yeah I know it sucks.

Update: snowcrash8 lists "koepi's 1.2 xvid codec" as working/compatible so you may prefer that to DivX 6.1

IMHERETOSTAY - no need to do port forwarding as its all running on the same machine, more than likely the transcode service is not running - need to check Windows Event logs and the log files for clues.

Thanks to micro23 and snowcrash8 for helping out:

About snowcrash8's suggestion:  "From there select the 'Log On' tab and select 'Local system account'. apply changes and start the service."  The only limitation with this is that you'll not be able to playback files stored on a network share on another computer using 'local system' credentials, other than that it should work fine.

Also thank you for letting us know koepi's 1.2 xvid codec as comptatible, I haven't tried this but I will check it out - I'm not a great fan of the DivX Networks codec myself (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Look a little bit futher down the page:

System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Transcode360]
Value Name: ConnectionTimeout
Data Type: REG_SZ (String Value)
Value Data: 40 (default in seconds)

That is the registry key you can modify to adjust the ConnectionTimeout on your Media Center PC.
Probably need to make that a little clearer.

I just wanted to clarify I installed both divx 6.1 and xvid 1.2 Since i'm playing xvid files does that mean that xvix 1.2 is working?

Hi!
I'm also getting the infamous "TRANSCODE 360: EXCEPTION. Transcoding request timed out!" error, and then, in the log file, this one:
08/02/2006 2:55:09 *ERR* Windows Media Encoder threw an exception: System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80004005): WMEncoder.PrepareToEncode() failed.
   at Transcode360.MceServer.StreamFile()
Seems to me a very common error, as has been reported by three or four of us.
Well, I've tried to transcode a video manually, and ffdshow runs just fine. But, just in case, I uninstalled it and installed Koepi's one. No luck, same errors.
I have to say that I've installed WME, but not the SDK, because its not documented to be necessary.
So, the mistery remains, and does not seem to be codec related.
Any ideas?
